Hey Phil, awesome vid man, love it, you can ride too. probably one of the best channels I watch, buff respect dude, keep um coming. Sundance: Nat Faxon and Jim Rash's truncated take on Ruben Östlund's beloved "Force Majeure" has fine intentions and some thrilling moments, but can never best the original. When “Parasite” filmmaker Bong Joon Ho won this years Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign-Language Film, the beloved Korean auteur used his podium to deliver a necessary message: “Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films. ” Its a lesson any film fan could stand to learn, including the audience who opts to take in Nat Faxon and Jim Rashs well-intentioned but ultimately flat “ Downhill, ” an Americanized remake of Ruben Östlunds understandably lauded 2014 black comedy “ Force Majeure. ” While the duo have snagged an enviable cast, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell taking on the lead roles of a married couple on edge (and then set right over it, swept away like, well, well get to that later) and a script co-written by “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong, its hard to ever shake the sense that everyone would be much better off just queuing up Östlunds film and moving on. Its clear from the start that Faxon and Rash have a lot of affection for Östlunds feature — hell, they didnt even bother to move the action of the film to an American location, as it still takes place in a randy Alps resort — but are intent on putting their own twists on it. Some of them work (Miranda Otto gets an outrageous turn as a nutso concierge, a sequence involving an ill-fated heliskiing outing is nearly perfect) but most of them dont (a reliance on the inherent jealousy social media can spark is about as basic a twist as anyone could craft these days. Mostly, however, the “Way, Way Back” filmmakers arent up to the task to navigate a tricky tonal balance, instead offering a floppy film that leans between cheesy humor and schmaltzy drama without ever finding the necessary, pitch-black medium that made the original such a treat. At least theres Louis-Dreyfus, who is most capable of occasionally bridging that yawning gap with a stellar performance. Like Östlunds original, “Downhill” follows a family of four on a necessary family vacation: Billie (Louis-Dreyfus) needs a break from the daily grind, Pete (Ferrell) is mourning the death of his father eight months earlier, and their two very different kids (here cast as brothers, with Julian Grey and Ammon Jacob Ford turning in solid performances) need to run free. Things are fine enough to start, despite the fact that the Stantons have mistakenly booked themselves into the “Ibiza of the Alps, ” barren of other kids and with a vibe mostly illustrated through Ottos gonzo performance as a liberated hotel worker and a single, incredibly depressing visit to a daytime dance club. “Downhill” Jaap Buitendijk Ferrell, who has turned in plenty of dramatic-skewing work over the course of his mostly comedic career, is oddly restrained here, and not nearly as low-key skeevy as Johannes Kuhnke in the original. His chemistry with Louis-Dreyfus is believable, with the pair slipping into long-married comfort even as Pete is distracted by the promise of his phone and all its social-media avenues. Its a cliched way to telegraph his apparent disaffection, with Ferrell relegated to a number of scenes in which he stares, glassy-eyed at his phone, while Bille and the kids huff around him. The object of his fascination: the traveling adventures of his co-worker Zach (an amusing Zach Woods) and his lady friend Rosie (Zoe Chao. Wouldnt it be cool if the new couple came to meet up with Billie and Pete? No, no it would not. ) The inciting incident of both “Downhill” and “Force Majeure” is a clever, ribald one that doesnt hit quite as hard in Faxon and Rashs hands. Lensed in nearly identical style to the original, it picks up after a fun morning of family-centric skiing, as the Stanton clan settle down for a sunny outdoor lunch on the deck of an amusingly Alps-themed restaurant. As a booming cannon indicates that yet another controlled avalanche is about to kick off, Billie, Pete, and the boys join the rest of the lunchtime crowd in gaping at the rolling, roiling snow coming…well, right at them. As interest turns to worry and eventually abject fear, absolute chaos breaks out on the deck, and Pete does the unforgivable: grabs his phone (his  phone. runs away, and doesnt so much as turn back to check on his wife and children. As with the original, it takes awhile for Billies blinding rage (and the boys creeping fear) to boil over. Armstrong, Rash, and Faxons script has truncated a few big sequences from the original film, though the trio have mostly kept in place the gobsmacking revelation scene in which Billie lets Pete have it while, of all people, Rosie and Zach are forced to watch (and occasionally participate. Along with the aforementioned heliskiing sequence, in which Louis-Dreyfus lets loose in ways both hilarious and horrifying, these solid scenes exemplify the best of what “Downhill” could be. And yet, the best exemplification of just that already exists: its “Force Majeure. ” Most damning, however, is Faxon and Rashs inability to harness the zinging tone of the original film, which tipped between comedy and drama without ever forgetting the power of the other sensibility. There are moments of great humor in “Downhill” (cast Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell, and Zach Woods in a film, and thats kind of the guarantee) and even fleeting pieces of solid drama, but nothing ever gels together in quite the way it should — in the way “Force Majeure” already did. Grade: C+ “Downhill” premiered in the Premieres section of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Searchlight Pictures will release it on February 14. Downhill Directed by James Rouse Produced by Benji Howell Written by Torben Betts Starring Richard Lumsden Karl Theobald Jeremy Swift Ned Dennehy Music by To the Waters Cinematography Alex Melman Edited by Bill Smedley Production company Crisis Films LTD Distributed by Rambling Road Entertainment LTD Release date 30 May 2014 [1] Running time 95 minutes Country United Kingdom Language English Downhill is a British comedy film directed by James Rouse and written by Torben Betts about four old friends who reunite to walk the Coast to Coast Walk. It stars Richard Lumsden, Karl Theobald, Jeremy Swift and Ned Dennehy. It was produced by Benji Howell and is noted for its "innovative" release strategy. [2] The film premiered at Zeffirellis, Ambleside, Cumbria. A restaurant and cinema complex in the heart of the English Lake District. Plot [ edit] At his kitchen table, in front of his teenage son Luke ( Rupert Simonian) and his hand-held camera, Gordon ( Richard Lumsden) explains the mission – to walk Alfred Wainwright s epic Coast-to-Coast Walk – starting at St Bees and finishing 192 miles on at Robin Hood's Bay. As he discusses the gruelling hike he is about to attempt, his wife jests that its, just an excuse for a massive piss up! After consulting his maps, Gordon rounds up the mismatched troop. A team which consists of best friend Keith ( Karl Theobald) who hopes this trail of discovery can help him alleviate his burdened mind, and old school friends Steve ( Jeremy Swift) a physically under-prepared school teacher, and Julian ( Ned Dennehy) the troublesome and troubled wild-card. As the journey unfolds and the alcohol flows, we discover not only why this incompatible bunch have not caught up for decades, but also about the trials and tribulations of entering the mid-life – whether it be money problems, hidden secrets, loss of identity, addiction or just general disillusionment. Julian's rebellious side continues to mock and thwart even the best of Gordon's meticulous plans, as they battle not only their personal crises and hangovers but also the seemingly unattainable journey and the struggle to sustain their frayed friendship. When the group crosses paths with two attractive, younger female travellers, who are attempting the same walk, another challenge is set and their friendship is seemingly pushed to the point of no return. During the journey, each character indulges in a cathartic release in an attempt to unburden themselves from their own demons. We come to realise, this journey is not only important for the original instigators, Keith and Gordon, but it bears a unique significance to each of the foursome. Cast [ edit] Richard Lumsden as Gordon Karl Theobald as Keith Jeremy Swift as Steve Ned Dennehy as Julian Production [ edit] The project first started as a seed idea the producer, Benji Howell, had been working on, based around the idea of "a road movie on foot. "I really wanted to make a film that was uncompromised by industry demands such as name actors for lead roles. It therefore had to be an idea that could be shot on a very low budget and at the same time not compromised by the size of that budget" says Howell. During this process, Howell was also making television commercials with the director, James Rouse. [3] The pair begun talking about the idea and both decided it would be a great feature project on which they could collaborate. citation needed] Howell and Rouse put together a story outline and roughly sketched character breakdowns and then began the search for a writer. They settled on Torben Betts, 4] a playwright who is particularly interested in character driven pieces. Betts, a former actor, also takes on a cameo role as The Helpful Walker. Rouse and Howell both financed the development then kick started the finance of the production budget. At the same time they approached Alex Melman, a DOP [ clarification needed] whom they had worked with extensively in commercials and asked him if he would like to shoot the film. He accepted, but also offered to come on board as a financier and executive producer. citation needed] It was an interesting proposition for Melman, whose debut feature was The Libertine (2004 film) starring Johnny Depp. As the film is shot from the perspective of a rarely seen ‘Luke it offered him the chance as cameraman to play a character. citation needed] The rest of the finance for the film came together very swiftly. The editor Bill Smedley and his co directors at Work Post came on board as executive producers. As did Robert Campbell, whose production company, Outsider, housed the project. Two further executive producers, Tom Shutes and Elli Gharbi, completed the finance. citation needed] The shoot took place in June 2012 – at that time the wettest June on record. At an early stage, they had decided to shoot in sequence and keep as close to the Coast-to-Coast Walk route as was possible, travelling west to east across the country, so the extreme weather conditions created havoc with the schedule. However, principal photography was completed three and a half weeks later. citation needed] In September that year, they went back to re-shoot some scenes that were needed due to the amount of rain-sodden rushes that they were dealing with in the edit as well as shooting a few additional scenes. citation needed] Editing and postproduction took place throughout 2013 in conjunction with Rouse and Howell continuing their work in commercials. They utilised their working relationships with postproduction company MPC and sound house Factory to finish the film. citation needed] Reception [ edit] The critical reception has been positive, with review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes giving it a rating of 89% based on 9 reviews, with an average score of 6. 62/10. [5] As has the audience response, with review aggregator IMDb currently scoring 8. 2. [6] Peter Bradshaw reviewed the film for The Guardian in his weekly round-up of cinema releases, where he said, I liked it very much, likeable and funny, excellent turn from Ned Dennehy. 7] Downhill also received four star print reviews from The Independent, 8] Daily Mail and The Times. [9] It also had a plethora of other positive reviews, including Radio Times, 10] Empire (film magazine. 11] Total Film, 12] and Richard Kline, 13] as well as endorsement from Stephen Fry. Downhill reached number 1 in the iTunes film chart 'Independent Film' category and number 6 in the general iTunes charts on its week of release. " Sundance Film Festival PARK CITY, Utah — Sometimes combining a ton of things we love makes for something even better. See: Long Island Iced Tea and puggles. Other times, mixing all our favorite stuff causes a regrettable mess. See: Chocolate wine and the movie “Downhill. ” That comedy, which premiered Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival, brings together Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell and the plot of an acclaimed European movie. “Count me in! ” you think. But, sadly, merlot just isnt meant to taste like cocoa beans. The medium-funny “Downhill” is a remake of a European film called “Force Majeure, ” and, like when your friend starts casually calling elevators “lifts, ” something feels not quite right about it. Louis-Dreyfus and Ferrell, both broad comics, are shoved into an overly subtle and somewhat pretentious mold that makes more sense for John Krasinski than Elaine Bennes and Ron Burgundy. You impatiently tap your foot waiting for the belly laughs to come. They never do. Ferrell and Louis-Dreyfus play a married couple, Billie and Pete, whove taken their two young sons on a ski trip, while also working out deep-seated relationship issues. That marital crack turns into a chasm when, during a controlled avalanche, Pete bolts inside the lodge, leaving his family to fend for themselves. Nobody dies — that would be too interesting! — but Billie is furious and the two end up spending most of their remaining holiday apart. That is a dumb-as-Ralph-Wiggum inciting incident for a comedy. Americans are known around the world for our volume and forthrightness, and for such a trivial, existential and, dare I say, European tiff to derail an expensive vacation for more than 20 minutes doesnt ring true. At all. But thats what “Downhill” has got to work with. Well, that, and some tremendous supporting performances that outshine the legendary leads. Miranda Otto as a sexually frustrated Austrian hotel worker and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund from “Game of Thrones”) as a mountain safety patrolman get more laughs in their five minutes onscreen than the entire rest of the movie does. Theres also a sexy lothario ski instructor named Guglielmo who tries to seduce Billie. Hes played by actor Giulio Berruti. Delightfully, Berrutis first-ever film credit was in 2003s “The Lizzie McGuire Movie, ” in which he assumed the role of Italian #2. Louis-Dreyfus is amusing trapped in a cabin with a turned-on stallion in the silly-steamy sequence. The closest thing to a bit Ferrell gets is when he incorrectly believes a younger woman is hitting on him at the bar. But on the whole, the pairing of these two comedy titans is forgettable and slow as an ice age. To put it in skiing parlance: “Downhill” is pizza-ing when it needs to french-fry.

So basically the modern day family. Why go see the movie you can just go to the mall and see these people walking around for free.

JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS AS BILLIE I was immediately interested in the premise… What appealed to me about the story was the idea that a person can be viewing their life through a certain lens, and what happens when that lens is taken off — whats different? And is, in fact, anything different? So the idea of a reality being altered dramatically is what appealed to me. NAT FAXON, JIM RASH FILMMAKERS The idea fit into what we react to the most, which is character-driven ballets between comedy and drama, ” Rash says. “Its the thing we gravitate towards most in the storytelling department. ” Adds Faxon: “We are drawn to these types of mixed-genre projects because, to us, they feel the most relatable. They mimic lifes unpredictable nature where daily stress or even tragic circumstances can often be accompanied by comedic moments and/or relief. Barely escaping an avalanche during a family ski vacation in the Alps, a married couple is thrown into disarray as they are forced to reevaluate their lives and how they feel about each other. Yes yes and yes. Downhill movie trailer song. 10:15 PM PST 1/26/2020 by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell play a couple whose marriage is destabilized by a near-disaster in this American spin on Ruben Ostlund's 2014 Swedish film, Force Majeure. ' Starring opposite James Gandolfini in Nicole Holofcener's Enough Said, Julia Louis-Dreyfus showed that her signature acerbic humor and killer timing could very effectively be redirected to access her character's inner life in a dramatic role. She again balances brittle wit with somber emotional depths in Downhill, though sadly, her performance is pretty much all this inert blunder has going for it. An American riff — don't call it a remake, urge the producers — on Ruben Ostlund's Swedish psychological thriller Force Majeure, the Searchlight release misses the mark in scene after scene. The superficial characterization of a miscast Will Ferrell doesn't help, but the more crippling issue is the filmmakers' fumbling grasp of tone in material that just seems a poor fit. This is not only one of those cases in which a U. S. makeover adds nothing to a memorable foreign-language film, it's the doubly dispiriting variation in which the more commercially minded overhaul relentlessly drains everything that was distinctive, edgy and original about the source. The basic plot outline remains the same, albeit with a shift from the French Alps to a ski resort in Austria. A middle-class couple, Billie and Pete Stanton (Louis-Dreyfus, Ferrell) whose marriage is showing mild signs of friction, are forced to re-evaluate themselves and each other through a less-forgiving lens when their vacation is marred by what feels like a near-disaster. While taking a break from the slopes at an outdoor mountainside café, they watch stunned as a supposedly controlled avalanche to improve piste conditions rumbles toward them; as it gathers speed and volume, they panic, but when Pete's instinct for self-preservation kicks in, he bolts, showing no concern for his wife and two sons (Julian Grey, Ammon Jacob Ford. In Ostlund's original, that setup yielded biting black humor but also blistering unease as the icy aftershocks cut deep fissures in the marriage while exposing the fragility of traditional models of masculinity and smashing the reassuring illusion of the paterfamilias as protector. All this took place against a brooding backdrop of majestic snow-covered scenery that became positively malignant. Co-directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash ( The Way Way Back) putting their stamp on an initial adaptation by Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, instead operate mainly in a comedy-of-awkwardness vein that's seldom particularly funny. Nor is their sudden darkening of the mood very persuasive after Billie stops bottling up her anger and spits out her shattered disgust in Pete in the movie's best scene. Where the psychological needling in Ostlund's film was carried out with forensic precision that recalled Michael Haneke with a merciless sense of humor, here it's mostly characterized by the sloppiness of filmmakers who seem reluctant to commit fully either to scathing comedy or to the discomfort of their characters' personal crises. This is particularly ineffectual in the case of Ferrell's Pete, an unlikable lump of a guy who never seems smart or interesting enough to have married and raised a family with Billie, an attorney who suffers no fools. Glued through much of the early action to his phone, Pete avidly follows the Instagram story of his younger office colleague Zach (Zach Woods) and the latter's new crunchy-granola girlfriend Rosie (Zoe Chao) as they travel through Europe, dispensing hashtags like #NoAgenda and #LiveYourBestLife as they hike the towns along the Rhine on 'shrooms. It's clear Pete is feeling the shrinking pleasures of marriage, fatherhood and middle age, and craving youthful adventure. When Zach and Rosie turn up and start sharing their bliss, the get-together is soured by Billie's account of the avalanche experience and Pete's defensive self-justification. This generates some dramatic texture as Rosie's smug serenity turns to indignation, which she later expands upon with Billie in a quiet moment on a ski lift. But while simmering Billie takes a solo day, Zach and Pete just drift off into tiresome dude stuff, involving afternoon drinking and a messy dance club interlude. In Ostlund's film, the equivalent Zach character was played by Kristofer Hivju and his magnificent ginger beard; the actor shows up here briefly in a droll scene as a resort safety chief, unintimidated by the Stantons' litigious threats. But the corrosive soul-searching spurred in Hivju's Force Majeure character by his buddy's family crisis has no echo in blandly drawn Zach. Perhaps the most glaring example of Naxon and Rash's muddled approach is Charlotte, a louche resort employee who advocates hard-partying hedonism, spending her winters sleeping with guests and her summers back on the farm with her husband. Played in an embarrassing performance by Miranda Otto, she's a Euro-trashy sketch-comedy creation that constantly undermines any authentic emotional stakes in the marital discord of Billie and Pete. That includes her intervention on Billie's solo day, when she pimps out hot Italian ski instructor Guglielmo (Giulio Berruti) to help loosen up the American guest. This thread also goes nowhere beyond some crudely executed physical comedy for Louis-Dreyfus (warning: do not try masturbating while standing up in snow boots) that just trivializes what the character is going through. At least Billie's efforts to work through the experience and figure out where it leaves her marriage provide a substantial arc for Louis-Dreyfus, and few come close to her skill at conveying twitchy annoyance. Ferrell, on the other hand, just goes from belligerent dishonesty to pathetic helplessness, unable even to communicate with Pete's boys, whom the script gives almost no role beyond that of routine sullenness and increased clinginess toward their mother. When Pete finally wises up enough to admit he behaved like a "selfish coward. there's no sense of tough self-examination or any real personal cost in Ferrell's shallow performance. And Billie's ultimate generosity in allowing him to save face just ends the film on a sappy note that further robs it of bite, as does the lame metaphor of the constancy and commitment required to "go down the mountain" with a life partner. Had Downhill looked halfway competent its shortcomings might not chafe quite so much, but almost every shot feels just a little off, every composition oddly clumsy. The best thing to be said about this dreary misfire is that it might send curious audiences off to see the real dramatic and darkly funny sparks generated by a calamity in the vastly superior Force Majeure.
