Whoever gave the thumbs down must be Beiber fans. My favorite song from them. Kicks so much ass. Another Oscar ceremony happened, and we got our fair share of joy and disappointment. After Parasite surprised the world and took Best Picture, it seems like the game has changed for the awards race, now that non-English speaking films can actually fight and be recognized as well as classics as… Green Book. The Oscar race is still full of pain and glory, and even though the year has barely started, we have a bunch of movies that are fighting for air. And here’s 50 of them. Yes, I had some free time in my hands and this is a cool hobby, so I took the liberty to introduce most of the movies that will have Film Twitter entertained for the following 12 months. I say most, because there are always contenders who come out of nowhere later in the year, so this is the starter set. Here we go. -Annette: Since Parasite’s road to the Oscars started at Cannes, it seems fair to talk about a movie that is circling a premiere in the world stage that is set in France. After delivering weird, indie classics like Mauvais Sang and Holy Motors (yes, the kind of movies that make you seem like a snob when you recommend them to people), Leos Carax is making his first movie spoken in the English language… and it has a musical screenplay written by the cult rock duo of Sparks. Recently robbed Adam Driver and previous Oscar winner Marion Cotillard sing in this tale of a stand-up comedian and a famous soprano singer who rise and fall in Los Angeles while their daughter is born with a special gift. It seems like a wild bet, but we already know that Carax is a master with musical moments, so this is one of the most intriguing question marks of the year. -Ammonite: It’s time to talk narratives. On the one hand, we have Kate Winslet, a known name who hasn’t been very successful in the Oscar race since her Oscar win for The Reader over a decade ago (with the exception being her supporting performance in Steve Jobs, where she had a weird accent). On the other, we have Saoirse Ronan, a star on the rise who keeps collecting Oscar nominations, with 4 nods at the age of 25, including her fresh Best Actress loss for Little Women. What happens if we put them together in a drama set in the coasts of England during the 19th century where both of them fall for each other? That’s gonna be a winning formula if writer/director Francis Lee (who tackled queer romance in his acclaimed debut God’s Own Country) nails the Mary Anning story, and Neon (the distribution company founded three years ago that took Parasite to victory) is betting on it. -Benedetta: We know the Paul Verhoeven story. After isolating himself from Hollywood for over a decade, he took Isabelle Huppert to an Oscar nominated performance with the controversial, sexy, dark and funny thriller Elle. Now, he’s back with another story that perks up the ears, because now he’s covering the life of Benedetta Carlini, a 17th-century lesbian nun who had religious and erotic visions. If you know Paul, you already can tell that this fits into his brand of horniness, and a possible Cannes premiere could tell us if this has something to carry itself to Oscar night. -Blonde: With a short but impactful directorial credits list that takes us from Chopper, to The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford to Killing Them Softly, Andrew Dominik is back with a film about Marilyn Monroe, a woman who has transcended the ideas of fame and stardom, in ways that are glamorous and nightmarish at the same time. After failing to launch with Naomi Watts or Jessica Chastain, the rising Ana de Armas takes the lead in the retelling of Monroe’s troubled life based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, which is said to be covered in the screenplay as somewhat of a horror movie. We don’t know what that means yet, but Netflix is gonna push hard for this one, especially considering how the Academy loves throwing awards to stars playing previous stars, and that also can possibly include co-stars Bobby Cannavale and Adrien Brody. -Breaking News in Yuba County: While he hasn’t gone back to the heights of his success achieved by the box office and award success of The Help (a movie that did not age well), Tate Taylor is still enjoying himself economically due to recent thrillers like The Girl on the Train and Ma. For his next movie, he’s made a dramedy that once again reunites him with Oscar winner Allison Janney, where she plays a woman who has to keep appearances and a hidden body when she catches her husband cheating on her, and then he dies of a heart attack. With a cast that also includes Mila Kunis, Regina Hall, Awkwafina, Samira Wiley, Wanda Sykes, Jimmi Simpson and Ellen Barkin, this could be a buzzy title later this year. -C’mon C’mon: You may love or hate whatever Joaquin Phoenix did in Joker, but you can’t deny the benefit of playing the Crown Prince of Crime in an Oscar-winning performance. The blank check that you share with indie directors afterwards. Now that Joaquin’s cultural cachet is on the rise, Mike Mills gets to benefit with this drama that stars Phoenix and Gaby Hoffmann, with him playing an artist left to take care of his precocious young nephew as they forge an unexpected bond over a cross country trip. We only have to wonder if A24 will do better with this movie’s Oscar chances compared to 20th Century Women. -Cherry: After killing half the universe and bringing them back with the highest grossing movie of all time, where do you go? For Joe and Anthony Russo, the answer is “away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe”. The Russo brothers are trying to distance themselves and prove that they have a voice without Kevin Feige behind them, with a crime drama that’s also different than their days when they directed You, Me and Dupree or episodes of Arrested Development and Community. To help them in the journey, they took Tom Holland (who also needs to distance himself from Spider-Man, lest he ends up stuck to the character in the audience’s eyes) to star in a crime drama based on former Army medic Nico Walker’s memoir about his days after Iraq, where the PTSD and an opioid addiction led him to start robbing banks. -Da 5 Bloods: After bouncing back from a slump with the critical and commercial success of BlackKklansman, Spike Lee is cashing a Netflix check to tell the tale of four African American veterans who return to Vietnam to search for their fallen leader and some treasure. With a cast that includes Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Isiah Whitlock Jr, Paul Walter Hauser and Chadwick Boseman, this sounds like an interesting combo, although we still should remember the last time that Spike tried his hand at a war movie, with the dull Miracle at St. Anna. -Dune: If you are on Reddit, you probably know about the new film by r/movies ’ new Messiah, Denis Villeneuve. While the epic sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert is getting a new chance in the multiplexes after that David Lynch movie that was forgotten by many, some are hoping that this will be the beginning of a new franchise (as seen by the release date of December 18, taking the spot of the usual Star Wars opening), and a return to the whole “remember when stuff like Return of the King or Fury Road were nominated for Best Picture? ” question. Timothee Chalamet will be riding a lot of hope, and sandworm. -Everybody’s Talking About Jamie: As you start to see, there are several musicals that are gonna be fighting for attention over the next year, and Annette was the first one. Now, we also have this adaptation of the hit West End production, that centers around a gay British teenager who dreams of becoming a drag queen and get his family and schoolmates to accept his sexuality. With a cast that mixes young unknowns, familiar Brits (Sharon Horgan, Sarah Lancashire and my boy Ralph Ineson) and the previously nominated legend that is Richard E. Grant (who is playing a former drag queen named Loco Chanelle), the creative team of the stage musical will jump to the big screen with the help of Fox Searchlight (sorry, just Searchlight), who has clear Oscar hopes with a release date right in the middle of awards heat, on October 23. -Hillbilly Elegy: Even though the Parasite victory gave many people hope for a new Academy that stops recognizing stuff like previous winner Green Book… let’s be honest, the Academy will still look for movies like Green Book. This year, many people are turning their eyes towards Ron Howard’ adaptation of J. D. Vance’s memoir about his low income life in a poor rural community in Ohio, filled with drugs, violence and verbal abuse. If this sounds like white trash porn, it doesn’t help to know that Glenn Close, who has become the biggest living Oscar bridesmaid with seven nominations, will play a character called Mamaw. And if that sounds trashy, then you have to know that Amy Adams, who follows Glenn with six nominations, is playing her drug-addicted, careless daughter. I don’t want to call this “Oscar bait”, but it sure is tempting. -I’m Thinking of Ending Things: After his stopmotion existential dramedy Anomalisa got him a Best Animated Feature nomination at the Oscars but at the same time bombed at the box office, Charlie Kaufman is getting the Netflix check. This time, he’s adapting the dark novel by Iain Reid, about a woman (Jessie Buckley, who is on the rise and took over the role after Brie Larson had to pass) who is taken by her boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to meet his parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis), in a trip that takes a turn for the worse. If Kaufman can deliver with this one, it will be a big contender. -In the Heights: Yes, more musicals! This time, it’s time to talk about Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Tony-winning musical, that was overshadowed because of his other small play about some treasury secretary. Now, his Broadway ensemble tale about life in a neighborhood in Washington Heights is jumping to the movie screen with Jon Chu at the helm, following the success of Crazy Rich Asians. This Latino tale mixes up-and-comers like Anthony Ramos (who comes straight from Hamilton and playing Lady Gaga’s friend in A Star is Born), names like Corey Hawkins and Jimmy Smits (who is pro bits), and Olga Merediz, who starred in the Broadway show as Abuela Claudia and who could be the early frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress, if Chu allows her to shine like she did onstage. -Jesus Was My Homeboy: When looking at up-and-coming Black actors right now in Hollywood, two of the top names are Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, who already appeared in the same movie in Get Out, which earned Kaluuya a Best Actor nomination. This time, they share the screen in Shaka King’s retelling of the story of Fred Hampton (Kaluuya), an activist and Black Panther leader… as well as the story of William O’Neal (Stanfield), the FBI agent sent by J. Edgar Hoover to infiltrate the party and arrest him. With the backing of Warner Bros, this will attempt to make an impact with a clash of actors that will have to fight with an August release date, not the ideal time to release an awards movie. -King Richard: Starting with Suicide Squad, Will Smith has been trying to prove that he’s back and better than ever. Some attempts to get back to the top of the A-list (Aladdin, Bad Boys For Life) have worked, while others (Gemini Man, Spies in Disguise)... have not. But Will is still going, and now he’s going for his next prestige play as he plays Richard Williams, the coach and father of the tennis legends Venus and Serena, who pushed them to their full potential. While it’s weird that the father of the Williams sisters is getting a movie before them, it does sound like a meaty role for Smith, who has experience with Oscar notices with sports biopics because of what he did with Michael Mann in Ali. Let’s hope director Reinaldo Marcus Green can take him there too. -Last Night in Soho: Every year, one or two directors who have a cool reputation end up in the Dolby Theatre, and 2020 could be the year of Edgar Wright. After delivering his first big box office hit with Baby Driver, the Brit is going back to London to tell a story in the realm of psychological horror, which has been supposedly inspired by classics like Don’t Look Now and Repulsion. With a premise that supposedly involves time travel and a cast that includes Anya-Taylor Joy, Thomasin McKenzie, Matt Smith and Diana Rigg, Wright (who also co-wrote this with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who was just nominated for Best Original Screenplay for her work in 1917) is making a big swing. -Let Them All Talk: Every year there’s more new streaming services, and that also means that there’s new players in the Oscar game. To secure subscribers to the new service, HBO Max has secured the rights to the next Steven Soderbergh movie, a comedy that stars Meryl Streep as a celebrated author that takes her friends (Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest) and her nephew (Lucas Hedges, again) in a journey to find fun and come to terms with the past. The last time that Soderbergh and Streep worked together, the end result was the very disappointing The Laundromat. Let’s hope that this time everything works out. -Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom: Now that Netflix got the deal to adapt August Wilson’s acclaimed plays with Denzel Washington’s production company, the next jump from the stage to the screen is a meaty one. Viola Davis is playing blues singer Ma Rainey in this tale of a heated recording session with her bandmates, her agent and her producer in 1927, with a cast that also includes Chadwick Boseman, Glynn Turman and Colman Domingo. The Tony nominated play talked about race, art and the intersection of the two, and it’s gonna be explosive to see that unfold on screen, even if director George C. Wolfe’s previous filmography isn’t very encouraging. -Macbeth: In a shocking development, the Coen brothers are no more. Well, just this time. For the first time in his career, Joel Coen is making a movie without Ethan, and it’s a Shakespeare adaptation. Denzel Washington is playing the man who wants to be king of Scotland, and Frances McDormand is playing his Lady Macbeth. While this just started filming and it will be a race to finish it in time for competition in the awards race, the potential is there, and this project has everybody’s attention. -Mank: After scoring 24 Oscar nominations and only winning 2 awards last Sunday, Netflix has to wonder what else must they do to get in the club that awards them. They tried with Cuarón, they tried with Scorsese, they tried with Baumbach, they tried with two Popes, and they still feel a barrier. Now, the big gamble for awards by the streamer in 2020 comes to us in the hands of David Fincher, who is basically their friend after the rest of Hollywood denied him (Disney dropped his 20, 000 Leagues adaptation, HBO denied the US remake of Utopia, and Paramount drove World War Z 2 away from him). In his first movie since 2014’s Gone Girl, David will go black and white to tackle a script by his late father about the making of the classic of classics, Citizen Kane, with previous Oscar winner Gary Oldman playing the lead role of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. Will the Academy fall for the ultimate “power of da moviesshhh” story? -Minari: Sundance can be hit or miss with the breakout films that try to make it to the Oscars. However, you can’t deny the waves made by A24 when they premiered Lee Isaac Chung’s new drama there, ending up winning the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the US Dramatic Competition. If Parasite endeared Academy voters to Korean families, Steven Yeun hopes that the same thing happens with this story, where he plays a father in the ‘80s who suddenly decides to move his family to Arkansas to start a farm. Even though the reviews have been great, we must also remember that last year, A24 had in their hands The Farewell, another Sundance hit about an Asian family that ended up with no Oscar nominations. Let’s hope that this time, the Plan B influence (remember, that’s Brad Pitt’s production company, of Moonlight and 12 Years a Slave fame) makes a difference. -Next Goal Wins: It’s a good time to be Taika Waititi. Why? Taika Waititi can do what he wants. He can direct a Thor movie, he can win an Oscar for writing a comedy set in WW2 about a Third Reich boy who has an Imaginary Hitler friend, or he can pop up in The Mandalorian as a droid. Taika keeps winning, and he wants more. Between his press tour for Jojo Rabbit and his return to the MCU, he quickly shot an adaptation of a great documentary about the disgraced national team of American Samoa, one of the worst football teams known to man, as they try to make the cut for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Everybody loves a good sports comedy, and Searchlight bets that we’ll enjoy this story led by Michael Fassbender as the new (and Dutch-American) coach in town who tries to shape the team for victory. -News of the World: Seven years after their solid collaboration in Captain Phillips, Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks reunite for more awards love in what seems to be Universal’s main attraction for the Oscars. This time, Hanks stars in a Western drama based on Paulette Jiles’ novel where he plays a traveling newsreader in the aftermath of the American Civil War who is tasked with reuniting an orphaned girl with her living relatives. With a Christmas release date, Universal is betting big in getting the same nomination boost that 1917 is enjoying right now, and the formula is promising. -Nightmare Alley: Following his Best Picture and Best Director wins for The Shape of Water, everybody in Hollywood wondered what would Guillermo del Toro do next. Well, as Del Toro often does, a little bit of everything and nothing. Some projects moved (as his produced Pinocchio movie on Netflix, or his Death Stranding likeness cameo), others stalled and die (like his proposed Fantastic Voyage remake). But now he’s rolling on his next project, a new adaptation of the William Lindsay Gresham novel that already was a Tyrone Power film in 1947. This noir tale tells the story of a con man (Bradley Cooper) who teams up with a psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) to trick people and win money, and how things get out of control. With a cast that also includes Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Rooney Mara and more, this could play well if it hits the right tone. -Nomadland: There’s breakout years, and then there’s the amazing potential of Chloe Zhao’s 2020. On the one hand, after making Hollywood notice her skill with the gripping story of The Rider, she got the keys to the MCU kingdom to direct the next potential franchise of Kevin Feige, The Eternals. And just in case, she also has in her sleeve this indie drama that she wrote and directed beforehand, with two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand playing a woman who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. If Chloe nails these two films, it could be the one-two punch of the decade. -One Night in Miami: Regina King is living her best life. Following her Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress in If Beale Street Could Talk and the success that came with her lead role in the Watchmen show on HBO, the actress is jumping to a new challenge: directing movies. For her big screen debut, she’s adapting Kemp Powers’ play that dramatizes a real meeting on February 25, 1964, between Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown. -Over the Moon: After earning praise and Oscar nominations with I Lost My Body and Klaus, Netflix will keep its bet on animated movies with a film directed by the legendary Glen Keane. Who? A classic Disney animator responsible for the design of characters like Ariel, the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Tarzan and more](), and who recently won an Oscar for Best Animated Short for Dear Basketball, which he co-directed with the late Kobe Bryant. Now, he brings us a musical adventure centered around a Chinese girl who builds a rocket ship and blasts off to the Moon in hopes of meeting a legendary Moon Goddess. -Passing: It’s always interesting when an actor jumps behind the camera, and Rebecca Hall’s case is no exception. For her directorial debut, Hall chose to adapt Nella Larsen’s acclaimed novel set in Harlem in the 1920s, about two mixed race childhood friends (Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson) who reunite in adulthood and become obsessed with one another's lives. With a premise that explores tough questions about race and sexuality, it looks like a tricky challenge for a first timer, but it would be more impressive if Hall manages to rise over the challenge. -Prisoner 760: An interesting part of following the awards circuit is looking at when it's appropriate to talk about touchy subjects in recent history. I’m saying that because this next movie tells the real life tale of Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim), a man who, despite not being charged or having a set trial, is held in custody at Guantanamo Bay, and turns towards a pair of lawyers (Jodie Foster and Shailene Woodley) to aid him. Based on the famous journal that the man wrote while he was being detained, the movie (that also counts with Benedict Cumberbatch) is directed by Kevin Macdonald who, a long time ago, helped Forest Whitaker win Best Actor for The Last King of Scotland. Could he get back in the race after almost 15 years of movies like State of Play? -Raya and the Last Dragon: This year, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ bet for the Oscars is a fantasy tale set in a mysterious realm called Kumandra, where a warrior named Raya searches for the last dragon in the world. And that dragon has the voice of Awkwafina. Even though they missed out last Oscars when Frozen II got the cold shoulder by the Academy in Best Animated Feature, this premise looks interesting enough to merit a chance. One more thing: between last year’s Abominable, Over the Moon and this movie, there’s a clear connection of animated movies trying to appeal to Chinese sensibilities (and that sweet box office). -Rebecca: It’s wild to think that the only time that Alfred Hitchcock made a film that won the Oscar for Best Picture was with 1940’s adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s psychological thriller novel, more muted and conventional than his more known classics. Now, Ben Wheatley and Netflix are giving the Gothic story a new spin, with Lily James playing the newly married young woman who finds herself battling the shadow of her husband's (Armie Hammer) dead first wife, the mysterious Rebecca. The story is a classic, and we have to see how much weird Wheatley stuff is in the mix. -Red, White and Water: Between 2011 and 2014, Jennifer Lawrence was everywhere and people loved it. She was America’s sweetheart, the Oscar winner, Katniss Everdeen. But then, everything kinda fell. Those X-Men movies got worse and she looked tired of being in them, her anecdotes got less charming and more pandering to some, she took respectable risks that didn’t pay off with Red Sparrow and Mother!, and some people didn’t like that she said that it wasn’t nice to share private photos of her online. Now, she looks to get back to the Oscar race with a small project funded by A24 and directed by Lila Neugebauer in her film debut, about a soldier who comes back to the US after suffering a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan. Also, Brian Tyree Henry is in this, and it would be amazing if he got nominated for something. -Respect: You know what’s a surefire way to get Academy voters’ attention? Play a real singer! Rami Malek took a win last year for playing Freddie Mercury, Renee Zellweger just won the gold after portraying Judy Garland, and now Jennifer Hudson wants more Oscar love. Almost 15 years after taking Best Supporting Actress for her role in Dreamgirls, Hudson will try to get more by playing soul legend Aretha Franklin, in a biopic directed by first timer Liesl Tommy that practically screams “give me the gold”. How am I so sure? Well, see the teaser that they released in December (for a movie that opens in October), and tell me. It will work out better for Hudson than Cats, that’s for sure. -Soul: Unless they really disappoint (I’m looking at you, The Good Dinosaur, Cars 2 and Cars 3), you can’t have the Oscars without inviting Pixar to the party. This year, they have two projects in the hopes of success. While in a few weeks we’ll see what happens with the fantasy family road trip of Onward, the studio’s biggest bet of the year clearly is the next existential animation written and directed by Pete Docter, who brought Oscar gold to his home with Up and Inside Out. The movie, which centers on a teacher (voice of Jamie Foxx) who dreams of becoming a jazz musician and, just as he’s about to get his big break, ends up getting into an accident that separates his soul from his body, had a promising first trailer, and it also promises a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, as well as new songs by Jon Batiste. The only downside so far for the marketing was the fact that the trailer reveal led people to notice a suspicious trend involving black characters when they lead an animated movie. -Tenet: When Leonardo DiCaprio finally touched his Academy Award, an alarm went off in the mind of a portion of Internet users, who have made their next crusade to give themselves to the cause of getting Christopher Nolan some Oscar love. And his next blank check, an action thriller involving espionage and time travel, could pull off the same intersection of popcorn and prestige that made Inception both a box office hit and a critically acclaimed Oscar nominee. It helps to have a cast of impressive names like John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki and Robert Pattinson, as well as a crew that includes Ludwig Goransson and Hoyte van Hoytema. In other words, if this becomes a hit, this could go for a huge number of nominations. -The Devil All the Time: As you may have noticed by now, Netflix is leading the charge in possible Oscar projects. Another buzzy movie that comes from them is the new psychological thriller by Antonio Campos, a filmmaker known for delivering small and intimate but yet intense and terrifying dramas like Simon Killer and Christine. Using the novel by Donald Ray Pollock, Campos will follow non-linearly a cast of characters in Ohio between the end of World War II and the beginning of the Vietnam War, with the help of an interesting cast that includes Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, Eliza Scanlen, Bill Skarsgard, Jason Clarke and Riley Keough. -The Eyes of Tammy Faye: After being known as a sketch comedy goofball because of The State, Wet Hot American Summer and Stella, Michael Showalter reinvented himself as a director of small and human dramedies like Hello, My Name is Doris and The Big Sick. For his next project, he’s gonna mix a little bit of both worlds, because he has before him the story of the televangelists Tammy Faye Bakker (Jessica Chastain, who has been really trying to recapture her early ‘10 awards run to no avail) and Jim Bakker (Andrew Garfield, who was previously nominated for Hacksaw Ridge, instead of Silence, because why). With a real life tale that involves Christian theme parks, fraud and conspiracies, this is the kind of loud small movie that Searchlight loves to parade around, especially as an actors showcase (Jojo Rabbit being the most recent example). The first image looks terrifying, by the way. -The Father: It’s weird to be in the middle of February and say that there’s already a frontrunner for the Best Actor race at the next Oscars. After its premiere in Sundance a couple of weeks ago, every prognosticator pointed in the direction of Anthony Hopkins (recently nominated for Best Supporting Actor in The Two Popes), who delivers a harrowing portrayal of an old man grappling with his age as he develops dementia, causing pain to his beleaguered daughter (recent winner Olivia Colman, who also got praised). With reviews calling it a British answer to Amour (in other words: it’s a hard watch), Florian Zeller’s adaptation of his acclaimed play not only benefits from having Hopkins and Colman together as a selling point, because it was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, a distributor with experience in getting Academy voters to watch adult movies with heavy themes. If you don’t believe me, watch how they got Julianne Moore a win for Still Alice, as well as recent nominations for Isabelle Huppert for Elle, Glenn Close for The Wife, and Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory. They know the game, and they are going to hit hard for Hopkins and Colman. -The French Dispatch: If you saw the trailer, we don’t need to dwell too much on the reasons. On the one hand, we have the style of Wes Anderson, a filmmaker who has become a name in both the critics circle and the casual viewer, with his last two movies (The Grand Budapest Hotel and Isle of Dogs) earning several Oscar nominations, including Best Picture for the one with Gustave H. Then, we have a long cast that goes from the director’s regulars like Bill Murray to new stars like Timothee Chalamet, and also includes people like Benicio del Toro. The only thing that could endanger the Oscar chances for this is that the story, an anthology set around a period comedy with an European riff on The New Yorker, will alienate the average Academy member. -The Humans: There’s the prestige of a play, and then there’s the prestige of a Tony-winning play. Playwright Stephen Karam now gets to jump to the director’s chair to take his acclaimed 2016 one-act story to the big screen, and A24 is cutting the check. Telling the story of a family that gets together on Thanksgiving to commiserate about life, this adaptation will be led by original performer Jayne Houdyshell (who also won a Tony for her stage performance), who’ll be surrounded by Richard Jenkins, Beanie Feldstein, Amy Schumer, Steven Yeun and June Squibb. If it avoids getting too claustrophobic or stagey for the cinema, it will be a good contender. -The Last Duel: Always speedy, Ridley Scott is working on his next possible trip to the Oscars. This time, it’s the telling of a true story in 14th-century France, where a knight (Matt Damon) accuses his former friend (Adam Driver) of raping his wife (Jodie Comer), with the verdict being determined by the titular duel. It’s a juicy story, but there was some concern when it seemed that the script was only being written by Damon and Ben Affleck (who’ll also appear in the film). A rape story written by them after the Weinstein revelations… not the best look. But then, it was revealed that they were writing the screenplay with indie figure Nicole Holofcener, who last year was nominated for an Oscar for her script for Can You Ever Forgive Me? Let’s hope that the story is told in a gripping but not exploitative way, and that it doesn’t reduce the role of Comer (who deserves more than some of the movie roles that she’s getting after Killing Eve) to a Hollywood stereotype. -The Power of the Dog: We have to talk about the queen of the indie world, we have to talk about Jane Campion. More than a decade after her last movie, Bright Star, the Oscar and Palme d’Or winner for The Piano returns with a non-TV project (see Top of the Lake, people) thanks to Netflix, with a period drama centered around a family dispute between a pair of wealthy brothers in Montana, Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Jesse Plemons), after the latter one marries a local widow (Kirsten Dunst). According to the synopsis, “a shocked and angry Phil wages a sadistic, relentless war to destroy her entirely using her effeminate son Peter as a pawn”. Can’t wait to see what that means. -The Prom: Remember the Ryan Murphy blank check deal with Netflix that I mentioned earlier? Well, another of the projects in the first batch of announcements for the deal is a musical that he’ll direct, adapting the Tony-nominated show about a group of Broadway losers (now played by the one and only Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells and, uh, James Corden, for some reason) who try to find a viral story to get back in the spotlight, and end up going to a town in Indiana to help a lesbian high school student who has been banned from bringing her girlfriend to the prom. The show has been considered a fun and heartwarming tale of acceptance, so the movie could be an easy pick for an average Academy voter who doesn’t look too hard (and you know that the Golden Globes will nominate the shirt out of this). It’s funny how this comes out the same year than Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, and then it’s not funny realizing that Film Twitter will pit the two movies against each other. -The Trial of the Chicago 7: After getting a taste of the director’s taste with Molly’s Game, Aaron Sorkin wants more. For his second movie, he’s tackling one of his specialties: a courtroom drama. And this one is a period movie centered around the trial on countercultural activists in the late ‘60s, which immediately attracts a campaign of how “important” this movie is today’s culture. To add the final blow, we have a cast that includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jeremy Strong, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Frank Langella, William Hurt, Michael Keaton and Mark Rylance. If Sorkin can contain himself from going over the top (and with that cast, it would be so easy to surrender to bouts of screaming and winding speeches), this could be one of the top contenders. -Those Who Wish Me Dead: Having made a good splash in the directorial waters with Wind River, Taylor Sheridan (also known for writing the Sicario movies, the Oscar-nominated Hell or High Water or that Yellowstone show that your uncle raves about on Facebook) returns with yet another modern Western. For this thriller based on the Michael Koryta novel, Angelina Jolie stars as a survival expert in the Montana wilderness who is tasked with protecting a teenager who witnessed a murder, while assassins are pursuing him and a wildfire grows closer. -Untitled David O. Russell Project: Following the mop epic Joy, that came and went in theaters but still netted a Best Actress nomination for Jennifer Lawrence, the angriest director in Hollywood took a bit of a break (it didn’t help that he tried to do a really expensive show with Amazon starring Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore that fell apart when the Weinstein exposes sank everything). Now, he’s quickly putting together his return to the days of Oscar love that came with stuff like The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, with a new movie that is set to star Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and Michael B. Jordan. Even though we don’t know many details (some people are saying the movie is called Amsterdam) except for the fact the movie hasn’t started shooting yet, David is a quick guy, so he’ll get it ready for the fall festival circuit. If there’s one thing that David O. Russell knows (apart from avoid getting cancelled for abusing people like Lily Tomlin, Amy Adams and his niece), it’s to make loud actor showcases. -Untitled Nora Fingscheidt Project: When Bird Box became one of the biggest hits on Netflix history, the streamer decided to keep itself in the Sandra Bullock business. Sandy’s next project for Ted Sarandos is a drama where she plays a woman who is released from prison after serving time for a violent crime, and re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past. To get redemption, she searches her younger sister she was forced to leave behind. With the direction of Fingscheidt, who comes from an acclaimed directorial debut with Systemsprenger (Germany’s submission to the last Academy Awards), and a cast that also includes Viola Davis, Vincent D’Onofrio and Jon Bernthal, this will also hopefully try its luck later this year. -Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Project: We don’t know if this movie will be ready for the end of the year (although last time, he managed to sneak Phantom Thread under the buzzer and earn several Oscar nominations, including Best Picture), but PTA is apparently gonna start to shoot it soon, with the backing of Focus Features. After several movies with prestige locations and intricate production design, Film Twitter’s Holy Spirit will go back to the San Fernando Valley in the 1970s, to tell the story of a high school student who is also a successful child actor. -Stillwater: Tom McCarthy’s recent career is certainly puzzling. After delivering the weird lows of The Cobbler, he bounced back with the Best Picture winner that was Spotlight. And following that, he… helped produce the 13 Reasons Why series. And following that… he made Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, a Disney+ original movie. Now, he’s back to the award race with a drama starring Matt Damon, who plays a father who rushes from Oklahoma to France to help his daughter (Abigail Breslin), who is in prison after being suspected for a murder she claims she didn’t commit. -West Side Story: To close things, we have to see one of the possible big contenders of the season, Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the iconic musical that translates Romeo and Juliet to the context of a street gang war in 1950s New York. While the decision to adapt again something that has been a classic both in Broadway and in movie theaters almost 60 years ago is a challenge, the idea of Spielberg doing a musical closer to the stage version with Tony Kushner as the writer is too tempting for the average Academy voter, who is already saving a spot in major categories in case Steven nails it in December. However, there’s two question marks. First, how well will Ansel Elgort and newcomer Rachel Zegler stand out in the roles of Tony and Maria? And second, will In the Heights steal some of the thunder of this movie by being, you know, more modern?

I predict a major collapse of American democracy and the dollar with it the day after the American 2020 Presidential Election. I'm just trying to sort out how it would go down, because its going to happen, just a question of what sequence of events happens afterwards. So, like the flair says "Spoiler Alert"! :) The election happens, massive Russian interference and hacking occurs but for the most part the votes of most areas are correctly tabulated and Trump has taken a major beating. Trump decides that because of the voting irregularities "we're going to have to take a look at what happened before we make any decisions" he does NOT concede the election. Bernie makes victory speech anyways. Bill Maher says "Told ya so! " Two days go by and Trump still has not suggested that he has lost, only that there was a "major major amount of hacking going on and we're trying to determine how and where it happened and we're going to get back to you about that, but we think we won but that the votes were flipped in the Democrats favor, but we're looking in to it. Stay tuned folks! "... outrage starts to grow. Thousands upon thousands of "Open Carry" types march on Washington to 'secure the election results and make sure democracy is carried out'... 99% of them are Trump supporters. They leave in their wake 100s of used insulin needles across the NE USA. Kylie Jenner appeals for calm on Instagram. Because of the call to action a million supporters of Bernie Sanders leave work and also go to Washington armed with pink hats and protest signs. The police are overwhelmed and the media is over hyping the already dangerous situation. Everyone decides to stay in DC. It looks like an Occupy movement made up of two camps. Police start arresting people on both sides. Another day passes and the stock market is not doing very well.. massive drops following the marches and occupation. FBI makes announcement that the election results are skewed and they can't tell how but there was massive hacking within the election. The media makes the situation even worse by saying that exit polls don't match results in many situations although it does seem that Bernie Sanders won via exit data and that the hacking didn't affect much of the actual outcome. Kanye suggests that everyone should just stay cool and wait for things to sort out. Because of the revelations President Trump decides that he did not lose because incumbent Presidents rarely do and he is still President. The occupation in DC goes nuts and people start to riot. Police get out of the way until shots ring out, people are dead, no one knows what happened but people without guns wearing Pink Hats are down, and the media is reporting that Trump doesn't seem to be doing anything about the violence other than allowing the police to attempt to settle it down. People stop going to work, its like 9-12 all over again, everyone is just watching their flavor of news broadcast, getting more and more worked up as the media talks about stolen elections, authoritarianism, and "this is how it happened in Germany" rants. Rachel Maddow has a 6 hour long election coverage special where she lays out just how we all got here. How the GoP refused to secure the elections. How it was common knowledge that the voting machines were not tamper resistant at all. How voter fraud could barely cover all of this. She is one of the lone voices coming out completely against Trump, CNN is being neutral and boring and suggesting that maybe we should have another election. Tucker Carleson says Democrats are just sore losers and that perhaps if we can't have free and fair elections we should just decide who gets to be President some other way. The next day the Stock Market plummets on opening bell, Americas allies have no faith in it anymore. United States Supreme Court begins to deliberate on the election outcome. Bernie Sanders makes a speech about "the end of American democracy if we do not fight tooth and nail for it! ".. he's banned from r/politics for "advocating violence" when he mentioned fighting. Trump hotels and properties are vandalized and attacked by protesters. Kylie Jenner appears in her Instagram posing while wearing a beret and holding an AK47. Media continues to stoke the fires, Fox News makes a call for all Patriots to go to Washington and their state capitols "to defend them from tyranny"! Mitch McConnel suggests that the real issue was with people who did not have the right to vote voting in the election and demands a recount of Florida and other key (very black) states and an investigation in to voter fraud. MSNBC continues to ask why the GoP did not do more to secure the elections. More people start making their way towards Washington to defend the protesters there that were being shot at. Trump finally calls in National Guard "to get these people, these protesters causing all the damage to our nations capitol off the streets and in prisons where they belong".. riots worsen, cops are hurt, buildings are set on fire in DC. Cities all over America hold protests and rallies, some are violent, many people being hurt, hospitals are not flooded but seeing a major increase in violent injuries from street fighting. Because of the increase in protesters and lack of national guard on scene, more Bernie supporters arrive, some of them are armed, some of the Trump supporters are shot and wounded. Police from all surrounding areas now descending on DC. National Guard about to deploy. USSC has an announcement later in the afternoon but waits until NG on scene in DC. Supreme Court decides 5-4 that Donald Trump is to remain President. DC erupts in chaos. Trump orders the National Guard to "target the protesters, not the law abiding gun owners protecting the capitol from them". Many National Guard troops quit on the spot over the obvious theft of the election. DC is unsecured as shooting starts on both sides, ex-NG troops make up the bulk of the Bernie Supporters covering the unarmed protesters and firing back at the those "defending" the White House from the protesters. The shooting goes on until early morning, Trump calls in the military. Tanks arrive on the streets of DC. "Finally", thinks Trump. The stock market crashes, Trump suggests foul play by those who hacked the election. Bernie Sanders vows to lead resistance against Trump himself. Many US cities are in flames. Open Carry Trump supporters walk the streets along side Police making sure that the protesters don't break anything else, many people are murdered. Outrage all over the internet, other nations look at America in disgust, many are saying that they will have to reevaluate their relationship with the United States and look to another nation for world leadership.. maybe Germany. Reports start to come in that Kanye West has been shot in an altercation in his home, he has died. Kylie Jenner is in custody. National Guard troops on many American streets. WalMart parking lots being used as detention and supply areas for troops. No one is buying anything anyways. Trump supporters can sign up to be in a special branch of Law Enforcement which will help assist law enforcement in their communities with trouble makers and petty crimes taking place. "Trump Squad" is officially formed, and you can register online and go to your local recruiting office for instructions on training programs. The next day while many are back at work reports start to come in about an attack on a middle school in the middle of nowhere in Texas. Then reports about it happening in Arizona. Southern California. Many confusing reports about shootings in schools and towns along the US southern boarder. It takes all day but Police from around the state merge to the areas where the reports are coming from and neutralize the attackers. A couple thousand people are dead, very many of them children, its one of the worst terror attacks in US history, with nearly as many people wounded as were killed in 9-11. Investigators will quickly discover the orgy of evidence on the attackers bodies and in their cars which indicates that they are ex-Iranian Republican Guard members who with the assistance of the drug cartels in Mexico were able to acquire automatic weapons on the US boarder and use them to extinguish the lives of many Americans in a suicide run on schools and community centers businesses and malls in America. "These terrorists looked to gain an advantage while we were distracted by the antics of a party of sore losers. But we will not fall, we will be strong, stronger than ever and we will retaliate against those that attacked us and they will pay very very dearly for attempting to sabotage us while were exercising our democracy. " Trump Squad members go on a tear throughout America getting revenge for the attacks on anyone who is brown and vulnerable. National Guard and Military kill many on both sides while trying to settle the nation down. Trump moves American troops on to the border, for real this time, suggests that he might have to take the guns away from "everyone". Troops move 5km in to Mexico to protect Americans living on the border. Emergency Border Wall construction begins very seriously, with USMC engineering squads providing most of the labor initially but in the coming months those arrested for illegally entering the country will be forced on to chain gangs to fill and carry sandbags to help support border security. America is said to be under an occupation of its own military and police by nations critical of the events in the USA. Americans start to appeal to the UN for help and many flee to friends and relatives in Canada and Mexico, 10, 000 of them are "DACA dreamers" escaping ICE persecution. Trump signs an executive order authorizing an immediate retaliatory attack on Iran and while congress protests because they have limited his authority on Iran significantly, there are only too many Admirals in the US Navy only too willing to follow his orders. Iran protests its innocence and claims that the terrorists were not on orders from Tehran. Iran suggests that the terrorists were somehow coerced in to committing the attack since they had nothing to gain and it was a suicide mission and suspects that elements of a foreign nation forced the men to carry out the attack. Mexico says that its ridiculous that the cartels would help Iran, there is nothing in it for them, nothing to be gained.. everyone is now calling for a border wall. Tomahawk missiles rain down on Iran anyways. Iran overwhelms antimissile defenses in Saudi Arabia and Israel and oil refineries and Tel Aviv are completely leveled. 1000s of American troops in Iraq are killed, the bases then overrun by Iraqi freedom fighters, then by the latest incarnation of ISIS. Israel nukes Tehran. Millions are dead. ICE in cooperation with the military begins to round up anyone with any ties to Mexico/Iran and puts them in massive emergency holding facilities. Bernie Sanders and Rachel Maddow are arrested for plotting a coup against the Administration. MSNBC/CNN are ordered to be "nice to the President during this difficult time". Internet mass censorship starts to appear in America for the first time, users noticing posts are disappearing if they are critical of Trump. Computers and devices of those critical of the war start to malfunction or simply stop working. Websites of Democratic party users stop responding to requests, its like they are no longer online. Since he acted without approval of congress they move to censure him and multi day long argument ensues as to whether he had the right to retaliated against Iran or not. Trump threatens Nancy Pelosi with imprisonment if she doesn't start to act properly. Trump issues an order restricting all new gun sales, gun stores all over the US start to panic.. Trump assures everyone "this is temporary until ICE and the military get a handle on troubled individuals looking to sow chaos in our communities".. all their inventories are seized, no records of what was taken are made. Polls find that people who previously supported Biden during his run for President are now supportive of Trump in his efforts to combat terror in the US and overseas. Biden says he is supportive of the Presidents efforts in this time of need, and so should we all be. Other countries begin to move Troops towards Israel as surviving Iranian troops and civilians organize to strike back against Israel. Jordan is unable to stop the flood of troops pouring in to the country and might not be trying to. Lebanon and Syria attempt to shell positions in Israel. Palestinian protests fire 1000s of grenades and drones in to Israel. Saudi Arabia appeals for calm while bombing convoys on route to Israel. In an effort to boost the stock market Trump releases a new tax plan that allows anyone making over 1 million dollars a year to invest in the markets instead of paying taxes. Ivanka opens a new company which supplies food and medicine to rich people in need during civil unrest. People start to find shelves empty in stores as panic buying begins. Rush and Alex Jones begin to make millions selling products designed to protect white people from brown people. A joke starts to go around the world " A Progressive, a Centrist, and a Trump Supporter are admiring a painting of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The Trump Supporter says, “They must be Progressives; they’re naked, and they’re eating fruit. ” The Centrist says, “Clearly, they’re Centrists — observe how politely the man is offering the woman the fruit. ” The Progressive notes, “They are Trump Supporters, of course. They have nothing to wear, nothing to eat, and they think they are in paradise. ” Saturday Night Live is cancelled. Colbert is replaced by Tucker Carleson on The Late Show. Seth Myers is in hiding with Bill Maher. "Covfefe" added to Websters Dictionary. It is very recommended by the administration that everyone watch one hour of Fox News every day. "Pollsters" from "Trump Squad" go door to door to ask people what they liked about what they saw on Fox that day. Its found that people are being "revenge murdered" in the night by their own neighbors, people are puzzled how this could happen in their communities and they are scared the police may be allowing these revenge murders to occur. Rogue "Trump Squad" members suspected to be the perpetrators. Some people in smaller communities start sleeping in shifts in their homes. The entire US military is mobilized for deployment to Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Israel to help to secure those countries and find the rest of the terrorists scattered through out the entire middle east, operations against any and all countries friendly or not begin if the CIA or Military intelligence feels there is ample reason to go in to them to kill targets. Its not even February yet, but as the radioactive cloud of debris from the Israeli attack on Tehran slowly begins to encircle the globe. World War 3 has begun in the Middle East, Americans start dropping bombs on convoys headed in its direction, but Trump has secured his future as President, maybe forever now that the all of America looks like Atlantic City and all for his personal benefit and the billionaires that supported his efforts to oppress anyone who stood against them. However.. a small faction of individuals, no one knew who they were or why they did it, but some suspect they were made up of people from Afghanistan who had lost everything during the war they were caught between the Taliban and the American occupation forces, it was rumored some had relatives stuck inside Guantanamo for nearly 20 years. Using information gained from the Russians long before their puppet gained the Presidency they snuck in to unsecured facilities that were critical for power distribution in the US. Wearing explosive vests they blew themselves and those facilities up simultaneously, placing America in the dark permanently.. and the rest of the world wondering what has happened to it, only Ham Radio signals are getting out of the USA and the general consensus is that no one knows what happened (outside of a few people who knew that facilities exploded for some reason but stories even first hand ones are sketchy at best).. everyone is literally in the dark. Then the radio broadcasts stop too. A week after the US power grid goes down Canada closes its boarder due to 'security concerns'. 4 days later after a flood of Americans "on vacation" have poured in to Mexico it also closes its boarder with the USA. It stands alone in North America. Trade deals break down completely. Trump suspends civil liberties, America is under martial law. Police have the right to shoot on sight anyone caught outside after curfew, without question. Wars erupt in the streets of America over food and safety issues, many are put down quickly by drone strike. "Trump Squad" is semi-officially disbanded although many continue to act as spies for the military occupation in exchange for food and medicine and fuel. Congressional Members protest the suspension of civil liberties, but after some are arrested the others fall in line. The Euro replaces the American dollar as the standard international currency. The Average American is now sitting in the dark, in the cold in Mid-December, they have no money and no savings not that there is anything to buy anyways. There is no electronic communication, the local paper when it does publish, a few pages are stuck cork boards in towns and city centers suggest that "everything is going to be okay, and the people who attacked the electrical grid are going to pay for what they did to our country". People start to die from the shortages of medication and power as it gets colder. People are hunting and camping in National Parks for basic survival. "Trump took my guns AND my insulin! I maybe got a week or so to live unless I get some medication, we're hoping the Nat Guard comes through with it... and I was on Trump Squad since day one dammit! Just not fair! ".. says Leopold A. Maface Work gangs are formed up of people without critical rolls, basically everyone who had a minimum wage job before the 2020 election unless they can prove that they voted for the administration is forced to work to dig coal to provide fuel and heat for the towns and cities they live in. People are burning garbage and wood to stay warm and for cooking, the smog over America is thick and it mingles with the radioactive debris in the atmosphere made of Iranians who were living in Tehran.. its still burning 5 months after the strike putting megatons of cancerous pollutants in to the air every day. Counties down wind of the strike protest but no one listens since the entire region is in flames anyways. The Mexican military begins rounding up Americans who have over stayed their visas and deporting them back. Many are found working for cartels as look outs and courtesans, without proper documentation its difficult for them to find gainful employment. Americans can't work or won't work are placed in detention centers far from where they live, they are never seen again but crematoriums across America are working day and night and bodies are only being mostly burned. The remaining remains are placed in mass graves and burned once more with white phosphorus and can be seen for miles with smoke that ironically reminds some people of their time at Burning Man. Mitch McConnell does a rail and says, "I've finally destroyed America for their war on the South. So many of those disgusting poors are finally dead and their ancestors and history in this country erased.. but so much more left to do though isn't there? ".. Putin picks up his glass toasts him, takes a sip and helps himself to some nose candy "But this evening let us just enjoy our success. ", he says in flawless English with only a mild accent as the head of the young girl he had stashed under the table the two were sitting at bobbed up and down over his lap. Trump looks out over the White House front lawn at the tanks, troops and the fires burning across Washington and thinks to himself.. "I've done it.. I showed them all! ".

I was in my twenties when this happened and I remember vividly what happened to Mr. Jewel. I'm glad someone is doing a movie help clear his name. And the trailer was great. I give it 3 out 3.1 gold medals.

O caso de richard jewell crítica

The movie literally accuses Kathy Scruggs of committing a crime that she didn't do. This is the most in-your-face instance of defamation I've ever seen in my life.

Our government murders innocent people. And blames innocent people

O caso de richard jewell trailer legendado. Filme o caso de richard jewell. For a very basic overview, this film tells the story of Richard Jewell (Paul Walter Hauser) a security worker affiliated with the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta who diagnosed a bomb scare and helped clear the scene to avoid larger destruction. While initially hailed as a hero, Jewell is eventually investigated by the FBI as a prime suspect in the bombing, as well as excoriated/harassed by the media.

I m from India just saw the trailer of this a month and a half ago immediately saw the history about the incident feel really really really sorry for the man who found out there was a bomb planted and he saved thousands of lives suspecting him as a terrorist without any clue truth needs to come out. People needs to know Saw his mom in this clip Ms Bobi Jewel I feel sorry what tough times she had to go through. RIP Richard Jewel. O caso de richard jewell online. I have to respond to all of the stories about a poor opening weekend. I want to see this movie but i don't go to theaters anymore. I wait for the stream release. I believe that is true for much of the demographic that this movie was made for.

O caso de richard jewell musica. It is great to see what really happened on that day and what he had been through to clear his name. All the casts are doing such a great job portrait their characters. Unfortunately Richard passed away at such young age or else he would be happy to see how this movie telling his story.

Almost a year ago to the day that I sit down to write this review, I saw "The Mule" in theaters and was embarrassed/saddened by how out-of-touch Clint Eastwood seemed to have become in telling a viable story on-screen. I was hoping that keeping him behind the camera for "Richard Jewell" would help matters, and the trailers really pulled me in. Sadly, this film is only a slight step above "The Mule" in terms of overall effectiveness at conveying a story.

めっちゃCMでやってんね. Dam he was still young when he passed. Rest In Peace 🌹🙏🏼. This breaks my heart and soul rip hero and dear god bless his mom.

  • Great to see a film about dancing! A relatively unexplored sub-genre of documentary, and Cunningham was welcome for this alone. It adds to a hole that I suppose Wenders' Pina opened.

  • On that note, this film should not have been shot in 3d, which added nothing but nausia. We expect the 3d was entirely for the purpose of (a) copying Pina and, relatedly, b) getting funding. But Cunningham's dances are far less spectacular and their presentation here likewise. The 3d only distracts from the movement in all but one Warhol-involved set, especially when edited with 2d archival.

  • First half entertaining, second boring. The film progresses at a monotonous pace: one thing happens and then another and then another. No real conflict or tension.

Which is a problem. Because there evidently was plenty of this, but only in reality. The movie, on the other hand, brushes past unconvincingly. No one in the film is given space apart from Cunningham - everyone else speaks to convince the audience how great he is. I wanted to hear from one of his female dancers honestly, in long form, of the darkness of Cunningham. This would help to flesh out his character, give us something to chew on, and organise the film into a narrative. As is, we grew progressively distrusting and disengaged with the Greatest Hits/ Victory Lap tone, before the film ends suddenly with the news that all his dancers left.

  • Ultimately we were left unconvinced that Cunningham (the dancer) was all that interesting. Fashionable certainly, he's attached to the right people, and I'm sure it would be great to be dancing as him, but the just-over-half-full prime-time-at-the-festival cinema was an endless circuit of yawns.

  • Nevertheless we feel cultured now.

Working with both archive footage and valuable sound recordings, she conjures up the avant-garde artist through recordings of his work, his philosophy of his art and comments by many close collaborators including notably John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg. Not meant as a biopic, film concentrates on spectacularlhy cinematic (in 3-D) new performances of many of his dances, executed by members of his company, which disbanded in 2011, after Merce's death in 2009.
At a q&a following the screening, Kovgan indicated that Wim Wenders' innovative 2011 3-D dance film about German choreographer Pina Bausch inspired her to take on this formidable project, finally starting shooting in Stuttgart in 2015 with principal photography taking place in 2018.
Her use of 3-D technique is outstanding, resulting in gripping visual images, enhanced by the accompaniment of the original dance scores by John Cage and others. For a novice like me, not overly familiar with Merce's achievements, the movie brings his dance to life and points to how 3-D technology can be used artfully rather than as a gimmick, or its current excuse to permit higher price points for movie admissions to films, both animated and action-oriented, that should play just as well if not better in 2-D on large screens.

Le daimon. In a role that was made for Jean Dujardin, he acts like he has been doing this for a long time. By 'this' I mean executing an eccentric project that is about to take over his life and muddle his relationship with the world. And by 'the world' I mean the sorry village that his Georges character travels to after buying a vintage jacket made of 100% deerskin which also marks his obsession with it, something that both induces laughter in its audience and also highlights the crazy, primal nature of obsessive compulsion characterized by depression, loneliness, and unconditional enmity against the humankind. I have no words to describe the virulent turn Le daim (Deerskin) takes as Georges laughingly has his way by conspiring with himself to take forward his obsession with his deerskin jacket, which I should add is 'killer style' in his own words. Whether it is the inflated price that he pays for the second-hand jacket or the newfound skill of videography or mistaking a film editor with a creditor, Le daim has been written in a way that is guaranteed to make you laugh every five minutes. The outlandish plot, accentuated by terrific performances by Dujardin and Adele Haenel (who acts with her face and that's enough) and also by the peculiar style of referral writing (where the aftermath of an event in a scene is shown in the following one or the one after that) by director-writer Quentin Dupieux makes this comedy crime drama a blast experience. I can't recommend it more and I am definitely going to be watching more of Dupieux's work. Bravo! TN.

Those who remained hungarian film. A wellplayed touching film. Good acting, Good subject, Good shooting. Recommended. Saw it on premiere on september 24 at Budapest's Corvin Mozi.
Probably the most essential thing to know about this movie is that it was made for television in the first place and later they considered pushing it into the Oscars, for big screens, as they thought it has the potential to win something. It probably has that potential but I don't think that it would be because the movie is that good. maybe for the acting as it was quite strong from the two main protagonists, or for the screenplay. Oh and for the music, that is indeed Oscar-worthy for today's standards. But if for anything other than that. well, then I would smell something fishinness behind that.
So as a TV movie this picture is far better than great. It has a distinctive visual atmosphere with its gray fuminess and late, cold autumny colors, the cinematography is beyond adequate for such TV movie norma, the world the story plays in is really authentic, beholds many details that reflects those old times. The dialouges are clevelry written, they behold the realism but also some theatrical factor for dramatic purposes. The acting is top-notch from the main protagonists, they bring well detailed characteristics into their relationship by which we really hold their connection close to our hearts, but overall all the cast did a good job. The soundtrack has probably the most appeal for an award as it has that really almost-but-not-yet cheesiness that can easily win your ears over, but overall a very pleasant music to listen to, reminded me of Clint Mansell's previous works.
What the whole movie might fall short on is the world building that plays in the post-war dictaturic times. There are some snipets about the oppression they maintained on all these people lived in the post-war city, however, other than having some tricky questions from the "comrades" it never went further than that, it didn't fully bring the overall alienating effect it should have for the story/narrative. It was kinda like only a world building element in order to remind the auidence what times this plays in, never fully did anything more than that. And probably, the ending, which refers onto this dictature didn't feel that cathartic, because of that "only-world-building-element" reason.
Talking with others on premiere some people found the whole fast paced evolution of the protagoninst's relationship unconvincing and out of place, that it needed much deeper, elaborative, slower tendencies to go through. Personaly I had no issue with it at all. I found the relationship really natural and organic in its own way, it was indeed a connection that is not that easily achievable by anyone, but these two somehow had the luck to have a mostly healthy relationship that helped both of them in some ways to heal all the scars the war times brought onto them.
So. basicly, that's all I got to say about this movie. From TV movie standpoints I found it really solidly done, a nicely put together motion picture that is pleasant to watch. For Oscar worthy theatrical experience it might fall behind a bit as it has some lack of details and elaboratness, so - even though I have no respect for Oscars nowadays - I kinda feel this movie has only oscar-worthiness on a few, specific fields and even there there is always much bigger fishes to fight against on awards like this. Again, if it wins any award other than the music, acting, or (maybe) for screenplay then there is something fishy back there in Hollywood (but it's Hollywood, the Oscars, so there is more dirty business than anything else today.

A 3 évad főszereplője valóban odajár, idén érettségizik.

113 M countries USA In the year leading up to the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, the four Smith daughters learn lessons of life and love, even as they prepare for a reluctant move to New York Vincente Minnelli writed by Victor Heerman, Sarah Y. Mason year 1944.

When Judy Garland was offered the part of Esther Smith in this film, she took it even though she thought her character was lifeless and childish. This turned out to be a good move for Garland, even though the whole movie did turn out to be a thoroughly vapid affair.
The movie tells of the life of the Smith family in turn of the century St Louis through the seasons of the year. The Smiths are presented as the model all-American family going through all-American travails. Esther and her sister Rose spend their time chasing boys, their younger sisters frolic and play, and their father frets over making enough money. His decision to move to New York to take advantage of a job offer thereby disrupting his family's picture-perfect life forms the core of the film, along with Esther's romance with the "boy next door. In the end Rose and Esther get the boys they are each after, the father decides to stay in St. Louis, and the World's Fair comes to town, demonstrating that they don't have to go to a big city like New York to have enjoyable and accomplished lives.
The movie was meant to be the ultimate escape, presenting an idealized, sentimentalized view of the American family during the hard times of World War II, a goal it accomplishes admirably well. Perhaps too well. The characters are oversentimentalized to the point of caricature, and the situations they find themselves in are usually dull or predictable. Though it is commendable for Hollywood to try to escape the then-predominant goal-and-obstacle formula, this film sorely needs a strong narrative to carry its paper-thin characters through its two hour length. The musical numbers are static and uninteresting to watch and do not make the film any better, even though some of the songs are quite good.
The only things that make this film watchable are Margaret O'Brien's as well as Judy Garland's performance and Vincente Minnelli's direction. Like the bright pastel and candy colors the film employs, Meet Me in St. Louis oozes sicky-sweetness; watching it is like eating several pounds of skittles within two hours.

Down by the Docks is a region I would choose as my point of embarkation aboard ship if I were an emigrant. It would present my intention to me in such a sensible light; it would show me so many things to be run away from. Down by the Docks, they eat the largest oysters and scatter the roughest oyster-shells known to descend- ants of Saint George and the Dragon. Down by the Docks, they consume the slimiest of shell-fish, which seem to have been scraped off the copper bottoms of ships. Down by the Docks, the vegetables at green- grocers' doors acquire a saline and a scaly look, as if they had been crossed with fish and sea-weed. Down by the Docks, they "board seamen" at the eating-houses, the public-houses, the slop-houses, the coffee-shops, the tally- shops, all kinds of shops, mentionable and unmention- able, ——board them, as it were, in the piratical sense, making them bleed terribly, and giving no quarter. Down by the Docks, the seamen roam in midstreet and midday, their pockets inside-out, and their heads no better. Down by the Docks, the daughters of wave- ruling Britannia also rode, clad in silken attire, with uncovered tresses streaming in the breeze, bandanna kerchiefs floating from their shoulders, and crinoline not wanting. Down by the Docks, you may hear the Incom- parable Joe Jackson sing the standard of England with a hornpipe, any night; or any day may see at the wax- work, for a penny and no waiting, him as killed the policeman in Acton, and suffered for it. Down by the Docks, you may buy polonies, saveloys, and sausage preparations various, if you are not particular what they are made of besides seasoning. Down by the Docks, the children of Israel creep into any gloomy cribs and entries they can hire, and hang slops there, ——pewter watches, sou'wester hats, waterproof overalls, ——"firtht rate articleth, Thjack. " Down by the Docks, such dealers, exhibiting on a frame a complete nautical suit without the refinement of a waxen visage in the hat, present the imaginary wearer as drooping at the yard arm, with the seafaring and earthfaring troubles over. Down by the Docks, placards in the shops apostrophize the cus- tomer, knowing him familiarly beforehand, as, "Look here, Jack! " "Here's your sort, my lad! " "Try our sea-going mixed, at two and nine! " "The right kit for the British tar! " "Ship ahoy! " "Splice the main- brace, brother! " "Come, cheer up, my lads, We've the best liquors here, And you'll find something new In our wonderful Beer! " Down by the Docks, the pawn- broker lends money on Union-Jack pocket-handker- chiefs, on watches with little ships pitching fore and aft on the dial, on telescopes, nautical instruments in cases, and such like. Down by the Docks, the apothe- cary sets up in business on the wretchedest scale, —— chiefly on lint and plaster for the strapping of wounds, —— and with no bright bottles, and with no little drawers. Down by the Docks, the shabby undertaker's shop will bury you for next to nothing, after the Malay or China- man has stabbed you for nothing at all; so you can hardly hope to make a cheaper end. Down by the Docks, anybody drunk will quarrel with anybody drunk or sober, and everybody else will have a hand in it, and on the shortest notice you may revolve in a whirlpool of red shirts, shaggy beard, wild heads of hair, bare tat- tooed arms, Britannia's daughters, malice, mud, maun- dering, and madness. Down by the Docks, scraping fiddles go in the public-houses all day long, and shrill above their din, and all the din, rises the screeching of innumerable parrots brought from foreign parts, who appear to be very much astonished by what they find on these native shores of ours. Possibly the parrots don't know, possibly they do, that Down by the Docks is the road to the Pacific Ocean, and its lovely islands, where the savage girls plait flowers, and the savage boys carve cocoa-nut shells, and the grim blind idols muse in their shady groves to exactly the same purpose as the priests and chiefs. And possibly the parrots don't know, possibly they do, that the noble savage is a wearisome imposter wherever he is, and has five hundred thousand volumes of indifferent rhyme, and no reason, to answer for. Shadwell church! Pleasant whispers of there being a fresher air down the river than down by the Docks go pursuing one another, playfully, in and out of the open- ings in the spire. Gigantic in the basin just beyond the church looms my Emigrant Ship, her name the Amazon. Her figure-head is not disfigured, as those beauteous founders of the race of strong-minded women are fabled to have been, for the convenience of drawing the bow; but I sympathize with the carver:—— "A flattering carver, who made it his care To carve busts as they ought to be, ——not as they were. " My Emigrant Ship lies broadside-on to the wharf. Two great gangways made of spars and planks connect her with the wharf; and up and down these gangways, per- petually crowding to and fro and in and out, like ants, are the Emigrants who are going to sail in my Emigrant Ship. Some with cabbages, some with loaves of bread, some with cheese and butter, some with milk and beer, some with boxes, beds, and bundles, some with babies, ——nearly all with children, ——nearly all with brand-new tin cans for their daily allowance of water, uncomforta- bly suggestive of a tin flavour in the drink. To and fro, up and down, abroad and ashore, swarming here and there and everywhere, my Emigrants. And still as the Dock Gate swings open on its hinges, cabs appear, and carts appear and vans appear, bringing more of my Emigrants, with more cabbages, more loaves, more cheese and butter, more milk and beer, more boxes, beds, and bundles, more tin cans, and on those shipping investments accumulated compound interest of children. I go aboard my Emigrant Ship. I go first to the great cabin, and find it in the usual condition of a cabin at that pass. Perspiring landsmen, with loose papers, and with pens and ink-stands, pervade it; and the general appearance of things is as if the late Mr. Amazon's funeral had just come home from the cemetery, and the disconsolate Mrs. Amazon's trustees found the affairs in great disorder, and were looking high and low for the will. I go out on the poop-deck for air, and, surveying the emigrants on the deck below (indeed they are crowded all about me, up there too), find more pens and inkstands in action, and more papers, and interminable complications respecting accounts with individuals for tin cans and what not. But nobody is in an ill temper, nobody is the worse for drink, nobody swears an oath or uses a coarse word, nobody appears depressed, nobody is weeping; and down upon the deck, in every corner where it is possible to find a few square feet to kneel, crouch, or lie in, people in every unsuitable attitude for writing are writing letters. Now, I have seen emigrant ships before this day in June. And these people are so strikingly different from all other people in like circumstances whom I have ever seen, and I wonder aloud, "What would a stranger suppose these emigrants to be! " The vigilant bright face of the weather-browned cap- tain of the Amazon is at my shoulder, and he says: "What, indeed! The most of these came aboard yes- terday evening. They came from various parts of Eng- land in small parties that had never seen one another before. Yet they had not been a couple of hours on board when they established their own police, made their own regulations, and set their own watches at all the hatchways. Before nine o'clock the ship was as or- derly and as quiet as a man-of-war. " I looked about me again, and saw the letter-writing going on with the most curious composure. Perfectly abstracted in the midst of the crowd; while great casks were swinging aloft, and being lowered into the hold; while hot agents were hurrying up and down, adjusting the interminable counts; while two hundred strangers were searching everywhere for two hundred other strangers, and were asking questions about them of two hundred more; while the children played up and down all the steps, and in and out among all the people's legs, and were beheld, to the general dismay, toppling over all the dangerous places, ——the letter-writers wrote on calmly. On the starboard side of the ship a grizzled man dic- tated a long letter to another grizzled man in an immense fur cap; which letter was of so profound a quality, that it became necessary for the amanuensis at intervals to take off his fur cap in both his hands, for the ventila- tion of his brain, and stare at him who dictated, as a man of many mysteries who was worth looking at. On the larboard side a woman had covered a belaying-pin with a white cloth, to make a neat desk of it, and was sitting on a little box, writing with the deliberation of a book-keeper. Down upon her breast on the planks of the deck at this woman's feet, with her head diving in under a beam of the bulwarks on that side, as an eligi- ble place of refuge for her sheet of paper, a neat and pretty girl wrote for a good hour (she fainted at last), only rising to the surface occasionally for a dip of ink. Alongside the boat, close to me on the poop-deck, an- other girl, a fresh, well-grown country girl, was writing another letter on the bare deck. Later in the day, when the self-same boat was filled with a choir who sang glees and catches for a long time, one of the singers, a girl, sang her part mechanically all the while, and wrote a letter in the bottom of the boat while doing so. "A stranger would be puzzled to guess the right name for these people, Mr. Uncommercial, " says the captain. "Indeed he would. " "If you hadn't known, you could never have sup- posed——? " "How could I! I should have said they were, in their degree, the pick and flower of England. " "So should I, " says the captain. "How many are they? " "Eight hundred, in round numbers. " I went between-decks, where the families with children swarmed in the dark, where unavoidable confusion had been caused by the last arrivals, and where the confusion was increased by the little preparations for dinner that were going on in each group. A few women here and there had got lost, and were laughing at it, and asking their way to their own people, or out on deck again. A few of the poor children were crying; but otherwise the universal cheerfulness was amazing. "We shall shake down by tomorrow. " "We shall come all right in a day or so. " "We shall have more light at sea. " Such phrases I heard everywhere, as I groped my way among chests and barrels and beams and unstowed cargo and ring-bolts and Emigrants, down to the lower deck, and thence up to the light of day again and to my former station. Surely an extraordinary people in their power of self- abstraction! All the former letter-writers were still writing calmly. and many more letter-writers had broken out in my absence. A boy with a bag of books in his hand and a slate under his arm emerged from below, concentrated himself in my neighbourhood (espying a convenient skylight for his purpose), and went to work at a sum as if he were stone deaf. A father and mother and several young children, on the main deck below me, had formed a family circle close to the foot of the crowded, restless gangway, where the children made a nest for themselves in a coil of rope, and the father and mother, she suckling the youngest, discussed family affairs as peaceably as if they were in perfect retirement. I think the most noticeable characteristic in the eight hundred as a mass was their exemption from hurry. Eight hundred what? "Geese, villain? " EIGHT HUN- DRED MORMONS. I, Uncommercial Traveller for the firm of Human Interest Brothers, had come aboard this Emi- grant Ship to see what Eight hundred Latter-Day Saints were like? and I found them (to the rout and overthrow of all my expectation) like what I now describe with scrupulous exactness. The Mormon Agent who had been active in getting them together, and in making the contract with my friends, the owner of the ship, to take them as far as New York on their way to the Great Salt Lake, was pointed out to me. A compactly made, handsome man in black, rather short, with rich brown hair and beard, and clear bright eyes. From his speech I should set him down as American. Probably a man who had "knocked about the world" pretty much. A man with a frank, open manner, and unshrinking look; withal a man of great quickness. I believe he was wholly ignorant of my Uncommercial individuality, and consequently of my immense Uncommercial importance. UNCOMMERCIAL. These are a very fine set of people you have brought together here. MORMON AGENT. Yes, sir; they are a very fine set of people. UNCOMMERCIAL (looking about). Indeed, I think it would be difficult to find Eight hundred people together, anywhere else, and find so much beauty and so much strength and capacity for work among them. MORMON AGENT (not looking about, but looking stead- ily at Uncommercial). I think so. ——We sent out about a thousand more yes'day from Liverpool. UNCOMMERCIAL. You are not going with these emi- grants? MORMON AGENT. No, sir. I remain. UNCOMMERCIAL. But you have been in the Mormon Territory? MORMON AGENT. Yes; I left Utah about three years ago. UNCOMMERCIAL. It is surprising to me that these peo- ple are all so cheery, and make so little of the immense distance before them. MORMON AGENT. Well, you see; many of 'em have friends out at Utah, and many of 'em look forward to meeting friends on the way. UNCOMMERCIAL. On the way? MORMON AGENT. This way 'tis. This ship lands 'em in New York City. Then they go on by rail right away beyond St. Louis, to that part of the Banks of the Mis- souri where they strike the Plains. There wagons from the settlement meet 'em to bear 'em company on their journey 'cross, ——twelve hundred miles, about. Indus- trious people who come out to the settlement soon get wagons of their own, and so the friends of some of these will come down in their own wagons to meet 'em. They look forward to that greatly. UNCOMMERCIAL. On their long journey across the Desert, do you arm them? MORMON AGENT. Mostly you would find they have arms of some kind or another already with them. Such as had not arms we should arm across the Plains, for the general protection and defence. UNCOMMERCIAL. Will these wagons bring down any produce to the Missouri? MORMON AGENT. Well, since the war broke out, we've taken to growing cotton, and they'll likely bring down cotton to be exchanged for machinery. We want machinery. Also we have taken to growing indigo, which is a fine commodity for profit. It has been found that the climate on the farther side of the Great Salt Lake suits well for raising indigo. UNCOMMERCIAL. I am told that these people now on board are principally from the South of England? MORMON GENT. And from Wales. That's true. UNCOMMERCIAL. Do you get many Scotch? MORMON AGENT. Not many. UNCOMMERCIAL. Highlanders, for instance. MORMON AGENT. No, not Highlanders. They ain't interested enough in universal brotherhood and peace and good-will. UNCOMMERCIAL. The old fighting blood is strong in them? MORMON AGENT. Well, yes. And, besides, they've no faith. UNCOMMERCIAL (who has been burning to get at the Prophet Joe Smith, and seems to discover an opening). Faith in——! MORMON AGENT (far too many for Uncommercial). Well. ——In anything! Similarly on this same head the Uncommercial under- went discomfiture from a Wiltshire labourer, ——a simple, fresh-coloured farm-labourer, of eight-and-thirty, who at one time stood beside him looking on at new arrivals, and with whom he held this dialogue:—— UNCOMMERCAL. Would you mind my asking you what part of the country you come from? WILTSHIRE. Not a bit. Theer! (Exultingly. ) I've worked all my life o' Salisbury Plain, right under the shadder o' Stonehenge. You mightn't think it, but I haive. UNCOMMERCIAL. And a pleasant country too. WILTSHIRE. Ah! 'Tis a pleasant country. UNCOMMERCIAL. Have you any family on board? WILTSHIRE. Two children, ——boy and gal. I am a widderer, I am, and I'm going out alonger my boy and gal. That's my gal, and she's a fine gal o' sixteen (point- ing out the girl who is writing by the boat). I'll go and fetch my boy. I'd like to show you my boy. (Here Wiltshire disappears, and presently comes back with a big shy boy of twelve, in a superabundance of boots, who is not at all glad to be presented. ) He is a fine boy, too, and a boy fur to work! (Boy having unduti- fully bolted, Wiltshire drops him. ) UNCOMMERCIAL. It must cost you a great deal of money to go so far, three strong. WILTSHIRE. A power of money. Theer! Eight shillen a week, eight shillen a week, eight shillen a week, put by out of the week's wages for ever so long. UNCOMMERCIAL. I wonder how you did it. WILTSHIRE (recognizing in this a kindred spirit). See Theer now! I wonder how I done it! But what with a bit o' subscription heer, and what with a bit o' help theer, it were done at last, though I don't hardly know how. Then it were unfort'net for us, you see, as we got kep' in Bristol so long——nigh a fortnight, it were—— on accounts of a mistake wi' Brother Halliday. Swal- ler'd up money, it did, when we might have come straight on. UNCOMMERCIAL (delicately approaching Joe Smith). You are of the Mormon religion, of course. WILTSHIRE (confidently). O yes, I'm a Mormon. (Then reflectively. ) I'm a Mormon. (Then looking round the ship, feigns to descry a particular friend in an empty spot, and evades the Uncommercial for ever- more. ) After a noontide pause for dinner, during which my Emigrants were nearly all between-decks, and the Ama- zon looked deserted, a general muster took place. The muster was for the ceremony of passing the Govern- ment Inspector and the Doctor. Those authorities held their temporary state amidships by a cask or two; and, knowing that the whole Eight hundred emigrants must come face to face with them, I took my station behind the two. They knew nothing whatever of me, I be- lieve; and my testimony to the unpretending gentleness and good-nature with which they discharged their duty may be of the greater worth. There was not the slight- est flavor of the Circumlocution Office about their pro- ceedings. The emigrants were now all on deck. They were densely crowded aft, and swarmed upon the poop-deck like bees. Two or three Mormon agents stood ready to hand them on to the Inspector, and to hand them for- ward when they had passed. By what successful means a special aptitude for organization had been infused into these people, I am, of course, unable to report. But I know that, even now, there was no disorder, hurry, or difficulty. All being ready, the first group are handed on. That member of the party who is entrusted with the passen- ger ticket for the whole has been warned by one of the agents to have it ready, and here it is in his hand. In every instance through the whole eight hundred, with- out an exception, this paper is always ready. INSPECTOR (reading the ticket). Jessie Jobson, So- phronia Jobson, Jessie Jobson again, Matilda Jobson, William Jobson, Jane Jobson, Matilda Jobson again, Brigham Jobson, Leonardo Jobson, and Orson Jobson. Are you all here? (Glancing at the party over his spec- tacles. ) JESSIE JOBSON NUMBER TWO. All here, sir. This group is composed of an old grandfather and grandmother, their married son and his wife, and their family of children. Orson Jobson is a little child asleep in his mother's arms. The Doctor, with a kind word or so, lifts up the corner of the mother's shawl, looks at the child's face, and touches the little clenched hand. If we were all as well as Orson Jobson, doctoring would be a poor profession. INSPECTOR. Quite right, Jessie Jobson. Take your ticket, Jessie, and pass on. And away they go. Mormon agent, skilful and quiet, hands them on. Mormon agent, skilful and quiet, hands next party up. INSPECTOR (reading ticket again). Susannah Cleverly and William Cleverly. Brother and sister, eh? SISTER (young woman of business, hustling slow brother). Yes, sir. INSPECTOR. Very good, Susannah Cleverly. Take your ticket, Susannah, and take care of it. And away they go. INSPECTOR (taking ticket again). Samson Dibble and Dorothy Dibble (surveying a very old couple, over his spectacles, with some surprise). Your husband quite blind, Mrs. Dibble? MRS. DIBBLE. Yes, sir, he be stone-blind. MR. DIBBLE (addressing the mast). Yes, sir, I be stone-blind. INSPECTOR. That's a bad job. Take your ticket, Mrs. Dibble, and don't lose it, and pass on. Doctor taps Mr. Dibble on the eyebrow with his fore- finger, and away they go. INSPECTOR (taking ticket again). Anastatia Weedle? ANASTATIA (a pretty girl in a bright Garibaldi, this morning elected by universal suffrage the Beauty of the Ship). That is me, sir. INSPECTOR. Going alone, Anastatia? ANASTATIA (shaking her curls). I am with Mrs. Job- son, sir, but I've got separated for the moment. INSPECTOR. Oh! You are with the Jobsons? Quite right. That'll do, Miss Weedle. Don't lose your ticket. Away she goes, and joins the Jobsons who are waiting for her, and stoops and kisses Brigham Jobson, ——who appears to be considered too young for the purpose by several Mormons rising twenty, who are looking on. Be- fore her extensive skirts have departed from the casks, a decent widow stands there with four children, and so the roll goes. The faces of some of the Welsh people, among whom there were many old persons, were certainly the least in- telligent. Some of these emigrants would have bungled sorely but for the directing hand that was always ready. The intelligence here was unquestionably of a low order, and the heads were of a poor type. Generally the case was the reverse. There were many worn faces bearing traces of patient poverty and hard work, and there was great steadiness of purpose and much undemonstrative self-respect among this class. A few young men were going singly. Several young girls were going two or three together. These latter I found it very difficult to refer back, in my mind, to their relinquished homes and pursuits. Perhaps they were more like country milli- ners, and pupil teachers rather tawdrily dressed, than any other class of young woman. I noticed, among many little ornaments worn, more than one photograph- brooch of the Princess of Wales, and also of the late Prince Consort. Some single women of from thirty to forty, whom one might suppose to be embroiderers, or straw-bonnet makers, were obviously going out in quest of husbands, as finer ladies go to India. That they had any distinct notion of a plurality of husbands or wives, I do not believe. To suppose the family groups of whom the majority of emigrants were composed polygamically possessed would be to suppose an absurdity manifest to any one who saw the fathers and mothers. I should say (I had no means of ascertaining the fact) that most familiar kinds of handicraft trades were rep- resented here. Farm-labourers, shepherds, and the like, had their full share of representation, but I doubt if they preponderated. It was interesting to see how the leading spirit in the family circle never failed to show itself, even in the simple process of answering to the names as they were called, and checking off the owners of the names. Sometimes it was the father, much of- tener the mother, sometimes a quick little girl, second or third in order of seniority. It seemed to occur for the first time to some heavy fathers, what large families they had; and their eyes rolled about, during the calling of the list, as if they half misdoubted some other family to have been smuggled into their own. Among all the fine, handsome children, I observed but two with marks upon their necks that were probably scrofulous. Out of the whole number of emigrants, but one old woman was temporarily set aside by the Doctor, on suspicion of fever; but even she afterwards obtained a clean bill of health. When all had "passed, " and the afternoon began to wear on, a black box became visible on deck, which box was in charge of certain personages also in black, of whom only one had the conventional air of an itinerant preacher. This box contained a supply of hymn- books, neatly printed and got up, published at Liver- pool, and also in London at the "Latter-day Saints' Book Depot, 30 Florence Street. " Some copies were hand- somely bound; the plainer were the more in request, and many were bought. The title ran, "Sacred Hymns and Spiritual Songs for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. " The Preface dated Manchester, 1840, ran thus: "The Saints in this country have been very desirous for a Hymn-Book adapted to their faith and worship, that they might sing the truth with an understanding heart, and express their praise, joy, and gratitude in songs adapted to the New and Everlasting Covenant. In accordance with their wishes, we have selected the following volume, which we hope will prove acceptable until a greater variety can be added. With sentiments of high consideration and esteem, we sub- scribe ourselves your brethren in the New and Everlast- in Covenant, BRIGHAM YOUNG, PARLEY P. PRATT, JOHN TAYLOR. " From this book——by no means explanatory to myself of the New and Everlasting Covenant, and not at all making my heart an understanding one on the sub- ject of that mystery——a hymn was sung, which did not attract any great amount of attention, and was supported by a rather select circle. But the choir in the boat was very popular and pleasant; and there was to have been a Band, only the Cornet was late in coming on board. In the course of the afternoon, a mother appeared from shore, in search of her daughter, "who had run away with the Mormons. " She received every assistance from the Inspector, but her daughter was not to be found on board. The saints did not seem to be particularly in- terested in finding her. Towards five o'clock the galley became full of tea- kettles, and an agreeable fragrance of tea pervaded the ship. There was no scrambling or jostling for the hot water, no ill-humour, no quarrelling. As the Amazon was to sail with the next tide, as it would not be high water before two o'clock in the morning, I left her with her tea in full action, and her idle Steam Tug lying by, deputing steam and smoke, for the time being, to the Tea-kettles. I afterwards learned that a Despatch was sent home by the captain, before he struck out into the wide Atlantic, highly extolling the behaviour of these Emigrants, and the perfect order and propriety of all their social arrange- ments. What is in store for the poor people on the shores of the Great Salt Lake, what happy delusions they are labouring under now, on what miserable blind- ness their eyes may be opened then, I do not pretend to say. But I went on board their ship to bear testimony against them if they deserved it, as I fully believed they would; to my great astonishment they did not deserve it; and my predisposition and tendencies must not affect me as an honest witness. I went over the Ama- zon's side feeling it impossible to deny that, so far, some remarkable influence had produced a remarkable result, which better known influences have often missed. * * After this Uncommercial Journey was printed, I happened to mention the experience it describes to Mr. Monckton Milnes, M. P. That gentleman then showed me an article of his writing, in "The Edinburgh Review" for January, 1862, which is highly remarkable for its philosophical and literary research concerning these Latter-Day Saints. I find it in the following sentences: "The Select Committee of the House of Commons on emigrant ships for 1854 summoned the Mormon agent and passenger-broker before it, and came to the con- clusion that no ships under the provisions of the 'Passengers Act' could be depended upon for comfort and security in the same degree as those under his administration. The Mormon ship is a Family under strong and accepted discipline, with every provision for com- fort, decorum, and internal peace. It is hard to think of anyone in Hollywood who started in the 1930s, worked constantly through the 1940s, who had a Washington press corp career in the 1950s, who worked in television in the 1950s, the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s, and into the 21st century, plus public relations press work at NASA, but there is June Lockhart, with glamour to spare. 'Meet Me in St. Louis' is a film about a city and a film about a well-to-do family that live in the city and their lives. The film is a romantic musical with elaborate design, filmed in Technicolour. Judy Garland plays one of the daughters, and one of the most touching parts of this film is when she sings to her little sister Tootie 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' when the family are upset to learn that they may have to move from St. Louis to New York City. Ester (Garland's character) is striking up a romance with the guy next door, and romance is a very important part in this film. Tootie, the younger sister, is charming in her own way and sometimes steals the show. Good musical numbers and well done.
