First of off, this lady was never had a romance with this Civil Rights activist.
Secondly, the FBI was not harassing her all because of hers political, nor because of hers involvement with Civil Rights, except it was because of her being involvement with a racist black group that was attempting to rob a several business and motivate to kill the enforcement.
Lastly, this lady was arrested for treason, publicity destruction, hatred, and harassing the soldiers whose return from Vietnam.
This movie needs to re-fix with fact-checking, instead of doing it to supports the propaganda.
I'll give it a 10 star once they fix it, but I know they won't.

The media threw everything but the truth at this story back in the day. They had everyone convinced, but they didn't know the truth.
If anything, it just goes to show how influential the media are. Even me, a boy who lived and breathed the Australian rock band for a decade, was at odds with Hutchence in the mid 90's and the media's take seemed plausible.
How wrong they were. Richard Lowenstein has restored the credibility to this fallen idol by populating the years with facts, some of which only came to light during the editing of the documentary.
This is an important documentary, especially if you're were or are still an INXS fan. There are also lessons in just how powerful the media are with public perception of celebrities.
The damage that they are responsible for. I'm glad that after 22 years this goes a long way to setting the record straight.
Watch this documentary and celebrate the life of a guy who was a wonderful talent. Because you've probably forgotten how good he was and also will discover how good a human being he actually was.

I love this song so MUCH! the voices are incredible. This is the must see holiday movie of the year! Take your kids and your kids friends, take your small group, college roommate, or grandmother! And even if you're not so sure about Jesus right now but you love holiday spirit, a cute manger scene, Oprah, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson or Kristin Chenoweth- GO see it! This is truly a holiday movie for the whole family. Warning, spoiler alert: it is NOT a nice holiday movie. 95% of it was about Mary and Joseph being hunted by the king's henchman, accompanied by his vicious dogs, while the donkey tries to find/save them. Let me say that just because the dogs try to be "good" at the very end, after the henchman falls off a cliff, doesn't make it a happy ending.
Of course, I know that persecution, hatred and violence existed and was part of the history. But Hollywood, please don't sell this to unsuspecting parents as a feel good holiday film! My child said to me afterwards, I never want to see that movie again. this 4yr old is wiser than the producers.

This girl just can't catch a break with this whole 'freedom' thing. lol

First of all, let it be clear, Dark Light isn't a gem nor a masterpiece but in this genre (horror/sci-fi) it's worth a watch. There is a good tension building throughout the movie, mostly due to very good sound effects (I can't say enough how this part is essential if you want a good horror movie) a refreshing story (it's a bit different than the usual entities or monsters) some decent actors, and a completely new vilain (credits for the originality. That said you won't be blown away but it's entertaining for this genre of movies. Dark Light deserves a higher rating than it actually gets.

I didn't really have much of any expectations for "Dark Light" from writer and director Padraig Reynolds. But still, this was a new horror movie, and being a life-long avid horror afficianado, of course I took the time to sit down and watch "Dark Light.
Turns out that it was actually time, money and effort well invested, because "Dark Light" turned out to be a rather enjoyable horror movie. What really worked was the way that director Padraig Reynolds had managed to capture the essence of the horror movies that I grew up with during the late 1980s and early 1990s. So this felt very much like a trip down memory lane for me.
While the storyline was generic; especially for someone like myself having grown up watching just about every single horror movie that I could manage to get my hands on, then there was just something essentially right about this movie.
The creature design was definitely interesting, and something that you haven't really seen in other movies. I will not ruin anything here and give anything away, you just have to watch it for yourself.
As for the acting in the movie, well of course you shouldn't be expecting any award-winning performances here, because the movie is not driven by character performances. Don't get me wrong here, because I will say that the acting in the movie was good.
My rating of "Dark Light" is a six out of ten stars.

I usually go 3 or 4 times per week, mostly on weekends. I keep track of dates/theaters/movies/ratings for fun and save all of the stubs. My ratings are what I give the movie right after seeing it, with no real 'checklist' or anything, mostly just initial thought/enjoyment/opinion. It's not meant to be taken super seriously, I'm not a professional reviewer. This is my full ranking for the year, from favorite to least-favorite, with a few small reviews/thoughts thrown in: Monos - 10/10 - Hands-down my favorite movie of the year and honestly high on my all-time list. It's Apocalypse Now meets Lord of the Flies, with some Beasts of No Nation thrown in. It builds a unique, lived-in world that's believable and brutal. Beautifully-filmed, some of the best shots of the year (the ending shot gets seared in your mind). Modern and grounded look at a militia/cartel fighting against an unnamed enemy in a Colombian jungle. It almost feels post-apocalyptic instead of 'cartel vs government', which I really loved. You get to imagine your own backstory as the story unfolds. Unforgiving and gut-wrenching, but hopeful too. Got a lot out of its cast. Can't recommend this movie enough. Really disappointed this didn't make the Best Foreign Language Film shortlist. "Masterpiece" gets thrown around a lot, but in my mind this is the only one this year. Marriage Story - 10/10 The Farewell - 10/10 Journey to a Mother's Room - 9/10 - Biggest surprise of the year, came out of nowhere. Deeply-personal story between a mother & daughter. It's very basic on the surface, and there's not much story (you start at Point A, and end at Point A), but it's the most emotional movie of the year. If you don't cry at least 3 times during this, you're probably not human. It's all about the unbreakable connection you have to your parent(s), from the day you're born until the day you die. It only takes place over the course of a few months, but feels like lifetimes. Beautiful little movie about separation, loss, and human connection. Waves - 9/10 - I could write 20 pages on how much I loved this movie. To keep it short, it's got a perfect soundtrack, perfect setting, awards-worthy performances (from Kelvin Harrison Jr., Sterling K. Brown, and Taylor Russell). Visceral story that grips you from the first minute and doesn't let go until the closing shot. Unique use of colors and aspect-ratio. It takes a huge risk structurally that pays off. It's also the only movie I went to see twice this year. Really worth it too, picked up on a lot of stuff on the second viewing. Would've went a third time if theaters kept it playing longer. Every tiny decision/action has a huge impact. Just watch this. Last Black Man In San Francisco - 9/10 Birds of Passage - 9/10 Apollo 11 - 9/10 - The best documentary of the year. Probably the best editing (and use of sound) I've ever seen/heard in a documentary. It's unique because they don't use interviews like most documentaries do, it's real sound the whole through. Impressive use of archival footage/audio. Uncut Gems - 9/10 - This movie wasn't on the Best Original Score shortlist for the 2020 Oscars. This aggression will not stand. The Mustang - 9/10 Wild Rose - 9/10 - If this doesn't win the Oscar for Best Original Song ('Glasgow'), I've lost all faith in the Academy. The ending concert scene had me crying like a baby. Jessie Buckley is gonna be big. Best music-drama since A Star Is Born. Transit - 9/10 Ad Astra - 9/10 - Top-notch acting, great atmosphere, world-building, existentialism, beautiful VFX, engaging score. Best opening scene of the year. Thoughtful commentary on modern society all wrapped in a Heart of Darkness blanket. If you're into space/exploration movies, then I recommend this. Surprised at the backlash this movie has gotten on r/movies. The Report - 9/10 - This was a really good year for legal-thrillers and The Report was the cream of the crop. Tight, Sorkin-like script with top performances from Adam Driver & Annette Bening. Could change a lot of minds about the war on terror and use of torture. Parasite - 9/10 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - 9/10 Midnight Traveler - 9/10 - If you feel like life is unfair and the odds are stacked against you, watch this movie. It puts everything in a different perspective. Every problem you have is going to seem minuscule compared to what this family went through. It's eye-opening and should fill you with anger. Luce - 9/10 - It's Kelvin Harrison Jr's world and we're just living in it. The Irishman - 8/10 Mickey and the Bear - 8/10 - Camila Morrone puts in the best breakout performance of the year. PTSD, drug-addiction, alcoholism, rural Montana, toxic relationships, James Badge Dale, following your dreams. What's not to love? The Art of Self Defense - 8/10 - The best dark-comedy of the year. So many great one liners. It's like Yorgos Lanthimos directing Death of Stalin, set in a karate studio. Surprisingly violent and depressing, but in all the right ways. Jesse Eisenberg's best movie Social Network? Peanut Butter Falcon - 8/10 - "Am I going to die? " "We all do, it's only a matter of time, now stop being a little bitch. " - Favorite line of the year, really stuck with me. Everybody Knows - 8/10 Mary Magdalene - 8/10 Knives Out - 8/10 - Well-crafted whoddunit with an ensemble cast. Just a genuinely fun time at the movies. Ana de Armas with well-deserved leading role for once. A few of the characters are a tad bit unrealistic (and basically caricatures), but the movie doesn't take itself seriously enough for that to be a problem. Daniel Craig hamming it up with a Southern accent was fun. Old school film with a modern twist. The Lighthouse - 8/10 The Dead Don't Die - 8/10 - This movie really isn't for everyone, but I loved the dry humor and purposefully-bad chemistry/dialogue. The line delivery was off-putting but hilarious. Everything is extremely on-the-nose and it works. I could watch 10 hours of Tom Waits talking to himself. Us - 8/10 Villains - 8/10 Ford v Ferrari - 8/10 Midsommar - 8/10 Jojo Rabbit - 8/10 Official Secrets - 8/10 - Keira Knightley with one of the most underrated performances of the year. Another really good legal/political-thriller that exposes the dark side of government bureaucracy. Pain & Glory - 8/10 John Wick 3: Parabellum - 8/10 Queen & Slim - 8/10 Amazing Grace - 8/10 - Great concert-documentary. Some of Aretha Franklin's performances in this should give you insane chills. I actually had this one rated higher right after watching it, but then looked up some of the people shown on screen and it turns out some were real pieces of shit, while preaching to people like hypocrits. Felt gross and took a lot of the magic out. One of my few revised scores this year. A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood - 8/10 Joker - 8/10 Non-Fiction - 8/10 - It's very French (talky and sexual) and the writing seems impressed with itself, but it's a good adult-drama that surprised me. I'm a big fan of Olivier Assayas and this is some of his best work. Rocketman - 8/10 Stan & Ollie - 8/10 Hustlers - 8/10 Avengers Endgame - 8/10 Doctor Sleep - 8/10 - It gets bloated and probably needed to be 20-30 minutes shorter (there's a shit ton of side-characters), but it was a worthwhile sequel to The Shining. Didn't feel like a cash grab and carries its own weight. Booksmart - 8/10 Little Monsters - 8/10 - I'd recommend watching this based just on Josh Gad's character. So over-the-top and hilarious. When he starts chugging hand sanitizer might be the most I laughed in a theater this year. Also Lupita Nyong'o playing & singing on the ukulele to a bunch of kids is exactly what I needed in my life. Cute zombie-comedy with a ton of heart. Spider-Man: Far From Home - 8/10 A Hidden Life - 8/10 - If there's a song from this year (or this decade even) that I'd want played at my funeral, it's James Newton Howard's theme from this movie. It's so beautiful and perfectly captures the feel of the movie. That song broke me down every time it played. I can't imagine this movie without it, it's that good. It's a shame this movie is getting ignored this awards season. Never Look Away - 8/10 Toy Story 4 - 8/10 Pavarotti - 8/10 The Biggest Little Farm - 8/10 - If you're really into the inner-workings of a Californian farm, then this is the documentary for you. Abominable - 8/10 The Current War - 7/10 Artic - 7/10 - Well made, solidly-acted. I loved the small details about survival that this movie brings up, makes it very grounded and realistic. I'm kinda bored of survival movies in general so this didn't blow my mind or anything. Bombshell - 7/10 Honey Boy - 7/10 - Pretty big letdown because I had really high expectations for this one. Lacked the emotional punch I hoped for. Didn't land for me at all, kind of like Boy Erased last year. I appreciate how honest and revealing it was, took a lot of guts for Shia LaBeouf to put this out there but it's forgettable. Lucas Hedges' Shia impression was reallllly on point though, that was worth the price of admission right there. Mid90s last year was a 10/10 for me and I expected the same for this. It was good, not great. American Woman - 7/10 - Sienna Miller's performance in this is awards-worthy. The accent she does is perfect and it might be the most underrated role of the year. The movie gets way too tearjerky at the end though. It's basically 2 hours of bad shit happening to a good person, which gets a bit overwhelming. The Beach Bum - 7/10 Captain Marvel - 7/10 Spies In Disguise - 7/10 - Looked pretty generic based on the trailer, but was actually pretty funny. Cold Pursuit - 7/10 Tolkien - 7/10 - Not much happens but it felt really comfortable. Solid performances all around and they handled the WW1 scenes better than I thought they would. Expected to be bored out of my mind based on the reviews and trailer but it flowed well. As far as "Nicholas Hoult Biopics of Famous Writers" go, it's miles ahead of Rebel in the Rye 2 years ago. Jumanji: The Next Level - 7/10 Sauvage/Wild - 7/10 Detective Pikachu - 7/10 Maiden - 7/10 Dark Waters - 7/10 -. Good performances and an okay script, even though it beats you over the head sometimes. Total waste of Anne Hathaway. She's way too good of an actress for a boring, generic, 'supporting wife' role with just a few lines. Not even sure why she was in this. Overall, a solid legal-thriller, which is a genre I really enjoy and I've been missing since its late-90s heyday. Pretty crazy story too, scummy and evil corporate greed is always interesting to explore on film (like The Insider). Should've been 20 minutes shorter and less on-the-nose Adopt A Highway - 7/10 The Wedding Guest - 7/10 The Hummingbird Project - 7/10 Motherless Brooklyn - 7/10 The Lion King - 7/10 Last Christmas - 7/10 - It's really easy to bash this movie, a lot of the humor falls flat and the twist is ridiculous, but I couldn't help walking out with a smile. I love how committed Emilia Clarke was to the character, and her interactions with her boss and family were legitimately heart-warming at times. Also did I mention how ridiculous that twist is? Richard Jewell - 7/10 - This was decent. Even though it's clearly Clint Eastwood's personal crusade (and thinly-veiled propaganda piece in some regards) against the FBI & the Spooky Media™, it still told the story effectively/semi-believably. Some of the characters (Hamm/Wilde obviously) were pretty ridiculous caricatures though, was hard to take anything they said seriously, I mean come on. You just roll your eyes at most of what they say. Some of the situations and encounters are too-conveniently set-up but that's easy to overlook. It had very solid performances (Hauser was great, especially when he finally let's his emotion show, in that scene where he kicks the table). Much better than The Mule, and 20x better than 15:17 To Paris. Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker - 7/10 21 Bridges - 7/10 Before You Know It - 7/10 Hobbs & Shaw - 7/10 - This is peak "Stupid Summer Popcorn Movie" and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's The Meg of 2019. Fighting With My Family - 7/10 Pet Sematary - 7/10 Downton Abbey - 7/10 - Never saw a single episode of the show before watching the movie, but it still felt familiar/safe to jump right in. Yesterday - 7/10 Greta - 7/10 - It's a cheesy, predictable, non-scary horror film but I liked it. Sometimes you just need Isabelle Hupert to play a psychopathic serial killer. Felt very old-school, a movie straight out of the 1980s. Judy - 7/10 - It's the definition of Oscar bait and is emotionally manipulative, especially towards the end, but it does a great job at humanizing a Hollywood legend. Frozen 2 - 7/10 Aladdin - 7/10 The Souvenir - 7/10 Zombieland 2: Double Tap - 7/10 - Nowhere near as memorable/iconic as the first one, but it still got a bunch of laughs from me (especially the Thomas Middleditch/Luke Wilson scene). Above-average for a comedy-sequel, but I could see this one not aging well. The Two Popes - 6/10 - Two solid performances but underwhelming overall, too many cheap-looking flashback scenes, not enough Pryce/Hopkins. Reminded me of Can You Ever Forgive Me? last year, depending on the 2 leads to carry a weak movie/premise on their back, to disappointing results. Highly-overrated movie. Ready Or Not - 6/10 Anna - 6/10 - It's basically Red Sparrow but slightly worse. Saint Frances - 6/10 Hotel Mumbai - 6/10 Shazam! - 6/10 - Low-stakes, formulaic, superhero movie clearly made with strict budget limitations. It hits all the notes you'd expect a movie like this to hit. It was decent. Alita: Battle Angel - 6/10 Loro - 6/10 - One of the more disappointing movies of the year. On paper it sounds amazing, a sprawling biopic of an infamous/corrupt Italian politician/mogul by Paolo Sorrentino who's not that far removed from a masterpiece? Sign me the fuck up. But nah, this was a shallow, surface-level (like my reviews), pointless dull knife of a biopic. Too much shoehorned religious imagery too. Tone is all over the place. It can't decide whether it's serious or funny and gets lost in-between. It looked nice at least. It also wins this year's "Most Nudity" award, easily beating the rest of the field. Teen Spirit - 6/10 The Upside - 6/10 Gloria Bell - 6/10 - Great performance from Julianne Moore but this just felt like "Middle-Aged Crisis: The Movie". Just couldn't connect to it. I imagine the original is a lot better. On The Basis Of Sex - 6/10 Stockholm - 6/10 Give Me Liberty - 6/10 - This is an example of a movie that has its heart in the right place but bites off a lot more than it can chew. There's a beautiful, emotional story in here somewhere, but it's too muddled with ineffective editing tricks and too many side-stories. It's sweet in some ways and the true-life characters bring a lot of charm, but it didn't do that much for me. A lot of 'year-end' lists have this as one of the most overlooked movies of the year, but I don't see it. Rough editing, bad soundtrack. Child's Play - 6/10 Good Boys - 6/10 - Just watch Booksmart instead. Styx - 6/10 Woman at War - 6/10 The Lego Movie 2 - 6/10 Missing Link - 6/10 Long Shot - 6/10 - The chemistry between Charlize Theron & Seth Rogen was great but the jokes couldn't really match it. It's a unique mix of politics & humor, but fell short of being an actual crowd-pleaser. Echo in the Canyon - 6/10 Cyrano, My Love - 6/10 Dora the Explorer - 6/10 Brittany Runs A Marathon - 6/10 IT: Chapter 2 - 6/10 - Way too long. Felt like a never-ending series of fetch-quests. Good CGI & acting though. Mister America - 6/10 Crawl - 6/10 Trial By Fire - 6/10 - Great performances by Laura Dern & Jack O'Connell get overshadowed by an overly-preacy script. It doesn't let the audience make up its own mind. The Third Wife - 6/10 Godzilla: King of Monsters - 5/10 - This needed less humans, more monsters. Where'd You Go Bernadette? - 5/10 Scary Stories to Tell Dark - 5/10 Her Smell - 5/10 - This movie made me physically nauseous. The tight, claustrophobic, haze-filled shots in the first 2 acts really threw me off. It's temporarily redeemed by a reallllllly good third act and a solid performance from Elisabeth Moss. But then deflated by a terrible final scene. By the Grace of God - 5/10 - Based on the critical acclaim, director, and subject matter, I walked in expected to be blown away. Basically expected Spotlight, but this movie completely derails at the halfway point. Hard to sit through. Blinded by the Light - 5/10 The Best of Enemies - 5/10 The Aeronauts - 5/10 - This is mis-marketed as an intense survival story but it's really just a boring biopic with too many flashbacks. Fall of the American Empire - 5/10 Family - 5/10 The Goldfinch - 5/10 - It turns out an unfilmable novel really is unfilmbable, who would've thought? Shoutout to Jeffrey Wright & Finn Wolfhard for actually trying. Angel Has Fallen - 5/10 Gemini Man - 5/10 Late Night - 5/10 Black and Blue - 5/10 Diane - 5/10 - This was just depression-porn. Sometimes it works (Mungiu/Zvyagintsev), sometimes it doesn't (this movie). It's such a bummer. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone but Mary Kay Place's performance makes it watchable and engaging sometimes. Destroyer - 5/10 How To Train Your Dragon 3 - 5/10 Rafiki - 5/10 - I feel bad for this score because I get that this is a really important/significant movie for African Cinema, but I just couldn't get past the terrible acting, bad (like baaaaaad) dialogue, and lackluster story. Again, pretty big achievement that this got made and reached a global audience, but yeah, in a vacuum, it's undoubtedly a bad movie. Felt like an amateur movie on a shoestring budget. Captive State - 4/10 Wild Nights With Emily - 4/10 - This movie is what happens when someone asks the question "hey, what if we turned Emily Dickinson's life into an SNL skit? ". I get what they were going for, and Molly Shannon is great, but this was extremely unfunny and probably the longest 84-minute movie I've ever seen. Dark Pheonix - 4/10 The Addams Family - 4/10 Midway - 4/10 To Dust - 4/10 Rojo - 4/10 - The only memorable thing about this movie is that there was a power outage about 90 minutes in so they comped my ticket and gave me a free drink. So that was cool, I guess. The Kid Who Would Be King - 4/10 MIB: International - 4/10 The Kid - 4/10 - There's a 98% chance that this movie is some kind of tax write-off or money laundering scheme. It somehow got 2 big names (Pratt & Hawke), co-starring the son of the producer in his first movie ever. Directed by Vincent D'Onofrio for some reason (??? ). Was dumped by Lionsgate in a few hundred theaters with 0 marketing/promotion, and flopped hard. It's dated, boring, and unoriginal. Cheesy dialogue. Literally a story that's been told a million times before, usually in much better ways. No reason for this to exist. Chris Pratt has the worst fake-movie-beard of all time in this, that's kinda worth checking out. Ramen Shop - 4/10 The Good Liar - 4/10 - The most convoluted, needlessly-complicated plot of the year. Helen Mirren & Ian McKellen both phone it in (I don't blame them, they were given trash to work with). I hate when movies try to crowbar "WW2 flashbacks" into their movies when it's not needed. Climax - 4/10 Harriet - 4/10 Lucy in the Sky - 4/10 - Once or twice a year, a movie comes along that has such a frustrating/stupid/anti-climactic ending it makes me actually angry. This is that movie. Natalie Portman had another movie like that last year (Vox Lux). Hey Noah Hawley, what the fuck? Freaks - 4/10 - This movie would fit well in the "Good Idea But Bad Execution" subreddit. Tel Aviv On Fire - 4/10 Ma - 4/10 Frankie - 3/10 Stuber - 3/10 Serenity - 3/10 - In a year full of batshit-crazy twists (looking at you, Last Christmas), this easily had the batshit-iest twist. It's something you actually have to experience yourself, and be fully-immersed in it, to appreciate how mind-numblingly crazy it is. How they got A-list talent for this script is a total mystery, but it probably involves of a lot of favors and cocaine. It's almost "so bad its good". Almost. I can't wait for the sequel, Free Guy, next year. Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil - 3/10 - More genocide than I expected for a live-action Disney fairy tale movie. Donnybrook - 3/10 The Photograph - 3/10 - Zzzzzzzzzz... Charlie's Angels - 3/10 Hellboy - 3/10 - This movie is like that annoying kid in middle school that tries way to hard to be edgy. It's gory and vulgar just for the sake of being gory & vulgar. It reminded me of the Predator reboot last year, had the same kind of dated/forced humor that seems to have no real target audience (except for the aforementioned middle school edgy kid I guess). Bad CGI and a boring villain. iirc it also had a lame sequel-bait ending which I hate. Happy Death Day 2U - 3/10 - The Sun Is Also A Star - 3/10 - It's filmed like a generic music video and has the emotional depth of a puddle. Don't Let Go - 3/10 The Invisibles - 3/10 Playing with Fire - 3/10 - This was just like Mark Wahlberg's Instant Family last year, except that it was worse in every imaginable way. No lie, the end-credits bloopers were by far better than anything else in the movie. It was the only time I even chuckled or felt any type of emotion. Cats - 2/10 - There's not much more I could say that already hasn't been said. Yes, it was bad. No, it wasn't the worst movie in history. For me, it was just so boring. Forgettable songs (except Beautiful Ghosts), no story/plot, nonsensical ending. Just wanted it to end. Jennifer Hudson just floating into space for no reason, Judi Dench giving me unwarranted lessons about raising cats, Ian McKellen slurping milk from a bowl, Extremely-Hairy-And-Naked-Idris-Elba, Cockroach Genocide, etc. These things all happened and we can't change them, and for us to grow as a society, we need to just move on and learn from our mistakes. Rambo: Last Blood - 2/10 The Sound of Silence - 2/10 - More like The Sound of Boredom, amirite? No but seriously, that's all I got. This movie was the closest I got to falling asleep in my seat this year. Synonyms - 2/10 Black Christmas - 2/10 - Extremely cheesy dialogue, cop-out violence, boring/predictable jump scares, low production value (bad even for a low-end Blumhouse movie), some of the worst one-liners you've ever heard, unrealistic/2D characters. Shitty ending. Wayyyyy too heavy-handed with the message. About as subtle as a flying brick to the forehead. Amateur acting, cutaway for every death, etc etc. After the Wedding - 2/10 - Overacted, muddled garbage. 47 Meters Down Uncaged - 1/10 Shaft - 1/10 - Crude, unfunny, soulless, grating, pointless. There's a million adjectives I could use to describe this reboot, and none of them are positive. This is one I'm surprised I didn't just walk out of. Probably didn't have anything better do do that day. Jexi - 1/10 - This year's worst movie. It's just the kind of movie that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, like you need to watch something else to get the stink of this one out of your mind. It was just so mean-spirited, from start to finish. Not a single joke landed, you just hated all of the characters. There are no redeeming factors. On the technical side, it was very basic, looked like a cheap music video. No memorable scenes, no good lines of dialogue, no originality in any way. None of the "cheerful"/"pick-me-up" moments earn any kind of emotional reaction. If you had a freshman high-school film student remake Her as a shitty comedy, this would be it. The fact that I paid money to see this is something I will never live down. The most theater visits in a one-week span was November 1st thru November 8th, with 8 movies that week. The most in one day was 3 movies in theaters on March 15th, 2019 ( Styx, To Dust, and Captive State). Plot [ edit] In England's Lake District, Peter Rabbit, his cousin Benjamin Bunny, and triplet sisters Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail, spend most of their days picking on old Mr. McGregor and stealing vegetables from his garden. They are friends with a local woman named Bea who spends her time painting pictures of the rabbits as well as the surrounding nature. Bea took on a motherly role with the rabbits after their mother's death. Their father had been killed and eaten in a pie by McGregor when they were still young. One day, Peter is forced to leave his jacket in McGregor's garden and goes back to retrieve it. However, it was a trap set by McGregor who catches him, but suddenly dies of a heart attack due to decades of unhealthy eating habits. Enthralled, Peter invites all of the local animals and takes over McGregor's manor. Meanwhile in London, McGregor's great-nephew, Thomas McGregor, an uptight, controlling workaholic, works at the toy department of Harrods department store where he waits for a promotion to associate general manager. He indifferently accepts the news about his great-uncle's death, someone he was completely unaware of, but is infuriated over losing the promotion to a lazy nephew of the managing director and is fired for losing his temper. His now-former manager encourages him to get a hobby and spend some time in the country. When Thomas learns that his great-uncle's manor is valuable and that he's inherited it, he decides to appraise and prepare it for resale in order to start his own toy store to get even with his former employers. He kicks out Peter and the animals and begins to upgrade the security of the garden wall and gates, despite Bea's objections. When Peter and a reluctant Benjamin sneak back into the garden, Thomas catches the latter and attempts to drown Benjamin in a river, but hesitates. Benjamin's relatives rescue him; Thomas instead accidentally drops a prized set of binoculars that Bea had given him earlier, forcing him to retrieve it. Thomas and Bea end up falling in love with each other, which causes Peter to become jealous and determined to separate them. Peter and Thomas start a war with each other by setting traps and other offensive nuisances. Things get out of hand when Peter rewires an electric fence set up by Thomas, prompting Thomas to throw dynamite in Peter's burrow. After the rabbits trigger Thomas' allergy to blackberries, Thomas attacks them in the garden with some of the dynamite and tells Peter that his antics caused him to become aggressive. When Peter detonates the dynamite to prove to Bea that Thomas was using it, he ends up blowing up the burrow, which causing the tree on top to crush Bea's art studio. Bea ignores Thomas’s explanation of the rabbits' involvement and breaks up with him. Thomas goes back to London to work at Harrods again. Peter feels remorseful for what he has done, and upon learning that Bea intends to leave the neighborhood, he and Benjamin head to London to bring Thomas back. Tricking Thomas into thinking he was imagining the rabbits’ ability to talk, Peter apologizes and encourages Thomas to follow his heart. They rush back to the country, where Peter shows Bea the detonator and presses it for her to see; thus confirming Thomas’ previous claims that the rabbits were responsible for the explosion. Peter and Thomas apologize to Bea and plead for her not to move away. Wishing to remain with Bea, Thomas no longer wants to sell the manor; but they discover an unpleasant wealthy couple (who Thomas had encountered earlier and been tormented by) had already bought the house and finalized the sale. Peter, his family and friends use their tricks to force the couple out of the house, allowing Thomas and Bea to move back in. Thomas and Bea resume their relationship, and he allows the wildlife to take food from the garden within reason. Peter and his family restore the burrow and the yard with Thomas and Bea's help. Thomas sets up his own toy shop in the village, where Bea showcases her paintings of the rabbits. [21] Trailer criticism [ edit] The first trailer received negative feedback from critics and fans of the character, many of whom labelled the film as being too modern and insulting to Beatrix Potter's works. Collider called the trailer "garbage" and a "low brow 'comedy' cringe fest". [22] Stuart Heritage from The Guardian stated that "the Peter Rabbit film looks like the result of some blisteringly inept manhandling [... ] there's something genuinely harrowing about the sight of Peter Rabbit – gentle, Edwardian Peter Rabbit – thoughtlessly injuring some birds, or grabbing a pile of lettuce leaves and making it rain like a banker in a strip club, or literally twerking" and argued "there is no way on Earth that [Beatrix Potter would] have ever given the green light to a slow motion car crash like this. Antes de la invasión, norteños de ambos partidos se habían mostrado dispuestos a aceptar el predominio de la esclavocracia; a raíz de la invasión, ambos partidos se fueron dividiendo cada vez más entre sus secciones norteñas y sureñas. El expresidente demócrata Martin Van Buren de Nueva York se opuso a la anexión de Texas y a la extensión de la esclavitud; rompió con los demócratas, y con el tiempo fue candidato para presidente por el Partido Tierra Libre [Free Soil] en 1848. David Wilmot, un congresista demócrata por Pensilvania, expresó esta hostilidad cuando añadió una cláusula al proyecto de ley referente a los créditos para la invasión de 1846 que prohibía la esclavitud en cualquier territorio arrebatado a México. La Cámara de Representantes aprobó esta disposición tanto en 1846 como en 1847, pero el Senado votó en contra en ambos años pues el Sur lo dominaba. La condición Wilmot muestra que las contradicciones entre el sistema esclavista del Sur y el sistema capitalista del Norte ya no podían convivir en el mismo país. Esto no significó que diversos representantes de ambas partes no intentaran más compromisos, pero esos intentos fueron cada vez más infructuosos. El fin de la guerra En 1848, con las tropas estadounidenses ocupando la mayor parte del país, incluida la capital, México firmó un tratado de paz con —el Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo—. El tratado estableció la frontera en el Río Bravo [Río Grande], cediendo a casi la mitad de México; a cambio, aceptó pagar 15 millones de dólares y se comprometió a evitar que los indios que vivían en territorio estadounidense atacaran México. Davis, que también luchó en el ejército de durante la intervención en México, por supuesto, se convirtió en el líder de la Confederación durante la Guerra Civil. Los sureños no renunciaron a su deseo de expandirse hacia el sur. Una década después de la invasión de México, un líder del Sur sostuvo: “Quiero Cuba. En 1898, consecuentemente, luchó una guerra contra España para quitarle Cuba junto con Puerto Rico y las Filipinas; para ese entonces, aunque la esclavitud ya había sido abolida, consiguió exportar a estos países la segregación tipo Jim Crow. A pesar de que el Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo otorgaba la ciudadanía estadounidense después de un año a los mexicanos en el nuevo territorio de, estos mexicanos enfrentaron discriminación racista. Muchos mexicanos propietarios de tierras fueron despojados de sus posesiones al norte del Río Bravo. Los mexicanos también fueron objeto de ataques racistas por los sheriffs, los Texas Rangers y vigilantes armados. Entre 1848 y 1928, por lo menos 597 mexicanos fueron linchados por turbas en Los indígenas que vivían en ese territorio también sufrieron ataques genocidas, tal y como sucedía en el lado mexicano. Para México, la pérdida de gran parte de su territorio nacional agudizó su inestabilidad. Hoy, desde luego, Estados Unidos es el país imperialista más poderoso y no hay nada progresista con respecto a la burguesía estadounidense. Mantiene a México y a Latinoamérica subyugados a través de acuerdos comerciales como el Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN) y, si es necesario, mediante fuerzas militares. Utilizan la Intervención Estadounidense, como se le llama, junto con la continua opresión de a México, para difundir la mentira de que los obreros y los capitalistas mexicanos tienen un interés común. La burguesía mexicana también procura oscurecer el hecho de que la estadounidense es una sociedad dividida en clases y que los obreros estadounidenses son los hermanos de clase —y cada vez más los verdaderos hermanos— de los trabajadores mexicanos. Poner fin a la subyugación imperialista de América Latina —y el resto del mundo semicolonial— requiere que la clase obrera en tome el poder como parte de revoluciones socialistas en toda América. Y los obreros estadounidenses también deben luchar por plenos derechos de ciudadanía para todos los inmigrantes y contra el imperialismo estadounidense en América Latina y el resto del mundo. Por esto nos oponemos al TLCAN, la rapiña de “libre comercio” contra México —no por razones proteccionistas, sino porque ha significado miseria para los trabajadores y campesinos mexicanos—. Y la oposición al racismo antiinmigrante en está directamente relacionada con la lucha contra la opresión de los negros, como lo muestra la historia de la invasión estadounidense a México. En México, los nacionalistas que tratan de desacreditar el socialismo a veces denuncian a Marx y Engels por haber apoyado la invasión estadounidense. Y en todo el Tercer Mundo, a veces también se les llama “racistas”. En 1848, Engels escribió acerca de la guerra: “En América hemos presenciado la conquista de México, la que nos ha complacido. Constituye un progreso, también, que un país ocupado hasta el presente exclusivamente de sí mismo, desgarrado por perpetuas guerras civiles e impedido de todo desarrollo, un país que en el mejor de los casos estaba a punto de caer en el vasallaje industrial de Inglaterra, que un país semejante sea lanzado por la violencia al movimiento histórico. Es en interés de su propio desarrollo que México estará en el futuro bajo la tutela de los Estados Unidos. Es en interés del desarrollo de toda América que los Estados Unidos, mediante la ocupación de California, obtienen el predominio sobre el Océano Pacífico. ¿Pero quién, volvemos a interrogar, saldrá ganancioso, por de pronto, de la guerra? Sólo la burguesía”. Algunos años después, en 1854, Marx le escribió a Engels sobre la guerra, llamándola “una digna obertura para la historia bélica de la gran Yanquilandia”. Varios días después, en otra carta, elogió el “sentido de independencia y capacidad individual Yanqui” y criticó a los mexicanos: “Los españoles están completamente degenerados. Pero, con todo, un español degenerado, un mexicano, constituye un ideal”. Bueno, esto es lo que se usa en contra de Marx y Engels. Y Marx y Engels estaban equivocados —pero no porque se pusieran a favor del imperialismo de o porque fueran racistas—. El periodo de la invasión de México se dio muy temprano en el desarrollo del marxismo, antes de que se publicara el Manifiesto Comunista. El capitalismo industrial aún estaba en proceso de desarrollo y Marx creía que necesitaba desarrollarse plenamente para hacer posible la revolución proletaria. El capitalismo era una fuerza progresista en ese momento, y Marx y Engels creían que uno de sus elementos más progresistas era la creación de una nación con una clase obrera unificada. Como resultado, Marx y Engels se opusieron a la libre determinación de las naciones pequeñas: ellos pensaban que esos pueblos deberían ser asimilados por las naciones más grandes. Ambos escribieron principalmente sobre los pueblos eslavos de Europa Central y Oriental, pero también lo extendieron a México. Bajo este punto de vista, la expansión del capitalismo a escala mundial no sólo beneficiaría a los países capitalistas desarrollados, sino también a los países atrasados. Como escribieron en el Manifiesto Comunista de 1848: “La burguesía, con el rápido perfeccionamiento de todos los medios de producción, con las facilidades increíbles de su red de comunicaciones, lleva la civilización hasta a las naciones más salvajes”. El entendimiento empírico de Marx y Engels sobre la invasión estadounidense de México estaba equivocado, pero sus premisas teóricas no lo estaban. Ellas se derivaban de una experiencia clave en la historia europea moderna que, de hecho, afectó a la familia de Marx: la ocupación napoleónica de Alemania entre 1806 y 1813. Adonde iba, llevando consigo los logros de la Revolución Francesa, Napoleón abolía las relaciones de propiedad feudales remanentes y establecía la igualdad formal ante la ley para todas las clases sociales. En Alemania, estas reformas liberales, incluyendo la emancipación de los judíos, proporcionaron un mayor impulso a los inicios del capitalismo industrial. Es decir, los logros de la revolución democrática burguesa llegaron al oeste y al sur de Alemania, gran parte de Italia e incluso al norte de los Balcanes, no por medio de una revolución nativa, sino a través de una conquista desde fuera. En muchos casos encontró resistencia reaccionaria bajo el nombre de la independencia nacional; así que para los intelectuales alemanes de la generación de Marx, una línea divisoria importante entre la izquierda y la derecha era la actitud retrospectiva frente a estas llamadas “guerras de liberación”, que en los estados alemanes fueron lideradas por la monarquía prusiana contra la ocupación napoleónica. El principio teórico de Marx y Engels de que el progreso social y económico está por encima de la independencia nacional, cuando ambas entran en conflicto, era correcto. Yo argumentaría que la posición de Marx y Engels sobre la ocupación de Napoleón fue una precursora teórica de nuestra posición de apoyo a la intervención militar de la Unión Soviética, un estado obrero degenerado, en Afganistán (que, en realidad, no es una nación) en 1979. Marx y Engels no estaban ciegos ni eran indiferentes a los crímenes monumentales cometidos por las potencias occidentales en contra de los pueblos de Asia, África y América. Pero vieron esos crímenes como el alto costo histórico de la modernización de esas regiones atrasadas. Y como ya he mencionado, en el siglo XIX México era un desastre sin mucha esperanza de una revolución proletaria, y el “tutelaje” estadounidense, como lo puso Engels, parecía el único posible camino a seguir. En 1853, en un artículo llamado “Futuros resultados de la dominación británica en la India”, Marx y Engels escribieron: “Inglaterra tiene que cumplir en la India una doble misión, destructora por un lado y regeneradora por otro. Tiene que destruir la vieja sociedad asiática y sentar las bases materiales de la sociedad occidental en Asia”. Pero esta proyección no fue corroborada por el curso del desarrollo real. De hecho, a pesar de que los capitalistas introdujeron algunos elementos de tecnología industrial moderna en sus colonias y semicolonias, como el transporte por ejemplo, el efecto general fue detener el desarrollo social y económico de los países atrasados. Para mediados del siglo XIX, las burguesías europeas dejaron de ser una clase históricamente progresista frente a las viejas aristocracias derivadas del feudalismo —siendo el punto crítico la derrota de las revoluciones europeas de 1848—. Marx y Engels generalizaron las experiencias por las que pasó Europa durante el período de las guerras napoleónicas. En el prefacio a la primera edición alemana de El capital de 1867, Marx escribió: “El país más desarrollado en el plano industrial no hace más que mostrar a los que lo siguen la imagen de su propio porvenir”. Esta afirmación describe acertadamente el desarrollo capitalista en Europa en los primeros años del siglo XIX. Al mismo tiempo, esta observación, que más tarde Trotsky describió como algo “condicional y limitado” (Lecciones de Octubre, 1924), se contradice con el hecho de que el colonialismo europeo fortaleció el atraso social y económico de los países y los pueblos que dominó. El marxismo es una ciencia. No se basa en sabiduría recibida, sino en la observación y el análisis de la realidad social. Los marxistas no son infalibles, y, de hecho, Marx y Engels aprendieron de sus observaciones y análisis del desarrollo y expansión capitalista. No fue hasta mucho después de 1848 que Marx y Engels desarrollarían una actitud muy diferente hacia el colonialismo, expresada, por ejemplo, en su defensa de la rebelión de los cipayos en la India ocupada por los británicos en 1857-58. A fines del siglo XIX, Marx y Engels se habían convertido en paladines de la independencia colonial, y reconocieron que la modernización de Asia, África y América Latina podría tener lugar sólo en el contexto de un orden socialista mundial. El capital de Marx (escrito en 1867) contiene un análisis mordaz de lo que él llamó la “acumulación primitiva del capital” mediante la sangre y la muerte de campesinos, trabajadores y otros. Hay un buen artículo en un número reciente de Workers Vanguard que trata sobre el desarrollo de la posición marxista respecto a la cuestión nacional (ver “The National Question in the Marxist Movement, 1848-1914” [La cuestión nacional en el movimiento marxista, 1848-1914], WV No. 931, 27 de febrero de 2009). Más en general, el imperialismo no se había desarrollado completamente en los tiempos de Marx y Engels. Les quedó a los bolcheviques lidiar plenamente con la importancia de la cuestión nacional en la época del imperialismo. Y los bolcheviques bajo Lenin y Trotsky lucharon contra todas las formas de opresión nacional y por el derecho a la libre determinación de las naciones. Y así como Marx reconoció que la modernización de Asia, África y América Latina podría tener lugar sólo en el contexto de un orden socialista mundial, Trotsky subrayó en su teoría de la revolución permanente que en los países de desarrollo capitalista atrasado la liberación nacional y la modernización social y económica sólo pueden tener lugar bajo la dictadura del proletariado, con la clase obrera luchando por extender su revolución a los países capitalistas avanzados. En cuanto a la invasión estadounidense de México, Marx y Engels, en un sentido histórico más específico, durante ese periodo no apreciaron el hecho de que ésta fortalecía el poder de la esclavocracia —el mismo poder que se interponía en el camino a un mayor desarrollo burgués—. En la década de 1840, ellos no sabían mucho acerca de Pero para el periodo de la Guerra Civil, Marx y Engels habían estudiado cuidadosamente el país. Los escritos de Marx sobre la Guerra Civil Estadounidense están entre los más perspicaces frente a cualquier observador contemporáneo pues comprendía que la guerra era una guerra de clases entre dos sistemas sociales opuestos. En 1861, al comienzo de la Guerra Civil, Marx escribió: “En la política exterior de los Estados Unidos, así como en la interior, el interés de los esclavistas servía de norte”. Mencionó en este contexto el intento de por comprar Cuba y a los filibusteros proesclavistas en el norte de México y Centroamérica, concluyendo que la política exterior de tenía como “propósito manifiesto” el “conquistar nuevo territorio para la expansión de la esclavitud y del poder de los esclavistas” (“La Guerra Civil Norteamericana”, 1861). Marx escribió que la esclavitud era la cuestión clave en la Guerra Civil, que él ligó a la guerra con México: “El movimiento entero se fundaba y se funda, como se ve, en la cuestión de la esclavitud. No en el sentido de si en los actuales estados esclavistas deben ser liberados directamente los esclavos o no, sino en el de si los veinte millones de hombres libres del Norte deben seguir subordinados a una oligarquía de 300, 000 dueños de esclavos; de si los enormes territorios de la república deberán convertirse en semilleros de estados libres o de la esclavitud; finalmente, de si la política nacional de la Unión debe enarbolar la bandera de la propagación armada de la esclavitud en México, América Central y del Sur”. La invasión de México y el arribo de la Guerra Civil Entonces, para el tiempo de la Guerra Civil Estadounidense, Marx reconoció que la invasión de México estaba integralmente relacionada con el desarrollo de la esclavocracia y que ésta era una de las cuestiones clave para el capitalismo estadounidense. Quiero hablar un poco acerca de la invasión de México y el arribo de la Guerra Civil. La invasión de México planteó la pregunta: ¿Quién controlará Estados Unidos, la esclavocracia o la burguesía? La respuesta no era evidente. Uno de los mejores historiadores de la época, James McPherson, ha dicho: “En vísperas de la Guerra Civil, la agricultura en base a plantaciones era más rentable, la esclavitud más arraigada, los dueños de esclavos más prósperos, y el ‘poder esclavista’ más dominante en el Sur si no en toda la nación de lo que alguna vez había sido”. Y el Sur era cada vez más beligerante. Aunque muchos norteños querían más compromisos con el Sur, especialmente los comerciantes de Nueva York que se beneficiaban con la venta del algodón del Sur, se hizo más claro al tiempo que la burguesía crecía que el establecimiento de una sociedad capitalista unificada requeriría destruir la esclavitud —es decir, otra revolución burguesa—. La conquista de tanto territorio mexicano condujo directamente a la Guerra Civil. En sus Memorias, Grant escribió: “La rebelión sureña fue en gran parte resultado de la Guerra Mexicana. Las naciones, como los individuos, son castigadas por sus transgresiones. Hemos conseguido nuestro castigo con la guerra más sangrienta y costosa de los tiempos modernos”. La pregunta inmediata que planteó la invasión de México fue: ¿Este nuevo territorio arrebatado a México será esclavista o libre? Durante la fiebre del oro en San Francisco, decenas de miles de personas se apresuraron a llegar a California, y en 1850 el territorio solicitó al Congreso ser admitido como un estado libre. Esto dio lugar a otra crisis, y hubo otro “compromiso” en 1850. Al igual que sus predecesores, el compromiso de 1850 sólo retrasó el conflicto inevitable entre el Norte y el Sur. Este compromiso le permitió a California entrar como un estado libre pero mantenía al resto de los territorios mexicanos usurpados en el limbo, con sus respectivos estatus por ser decididos cuando solicitasen convertirse en estados en el futuro. Éste sería el último gran compromiso. Y de hecho algunas partes de él —como la Ley de Esclavos Fugitivos de 1850, que exigía que los estados del Norte regresaran los esclavos prófugos a sus amos en el Sur— enardecieron aún más las divisiones entre el Norte y el Sur. La década de 1850 estuvo marcada por el Norte dándose cuenta de que su continuo desarrollo como sociedad capitalista significaba deshacerse del poder esclavista, y la esclavocracia dándose cuenta cada vez más de que su dominación en el país estaba amenazada. En otras palabras, la unidad entre el Norte capitalista y el Sur esclavista se iba rompiendo. La política nacional reflejaba esto. Aunque el general Zachary Taylor del Partido Whig fue elegido presidente en 1848, después de la guerra, sería el último whig elegido presidente, pues su partido se dividió entre el Norte y el Sur con respecto a la Ley de Esclavos Fugitivos. Incluso muchos demócratas del Norte no podían aguantar la dominación del poder esclavista en el país y su partido. Hubo una serie de partidos que se opusieron a la expansión de la esclavitud. En 1856, John C. Frémont fue el primer candidato a presidente por el Partido Republicano. Se postuló con el lema de “Tierra libre, libertad de expresión y Frémont” [Free soil, free speech and Frémont], que estaba en oposición explícita a la esclavocracia. A pesar de que no era en absoluto un partido abolicionista, el Partido Republicano comprendió que a fin de salvaguardar el crecimiento del capitalismo, el poder esclavista tendría que ser controlado y el crecimiento de territorio esclavista detenido. La decisión de 1857 de la Suprema Corte en el caso Dred Scott vs. Sandford, que declaró que el Congreso no podía restringir la esclavitud —y también declaró que las personas negras no tenían derechos en Estados Unidos— hizo la Guerra Civil casi inevitable. En 1860, cuando el primer presidente republicano, Abraham Lincoln, fue elegido con la plataforma de detener la expansión de la esclavitud, el Sur se declaró en secesión de la Unión con el fin de garantizar la esclavitud, lo cual quedó escrito en la constitución de la Confederación. O como Marx dijo: “la Confederación del Sur por lo tanto no libra una guerra de defensa, sino una guerra de conquista con miras a extender y perpetuar la esclavitud” (“La Guerra Civil en los Estados Unidos”, 1861). Sin entrar en muchos detalles, sólo mencionaré también que la esclavocracia del Sur mantuvo su esquema sobre México. Durante la Guerra Civil, el norte de México se convirtió en un punto geográfico importante de la Confederación para tratar de romper el bloqueo de la Unión y vender algodón a Europa. Según Eugene Genovese, la Confederación tenía planes para marchar “hacia Nuevo México con la intención de seguir a Tucson y luego dirigirse al sur para tomar Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango y Tamaulipas”, y “el gobierno confederado intentó hacer tratos con Santiago Vidaurri, el hombre fuerte de Coahuila y Nuevo León, para afiliar el norte de México a la Confederación”. Casi al mismo tiempo, México mismo estaba en medio de su propia guerra, en la que Benito Juárez luchaba contra la monarquía francesa y los conservadores mexicanos como Vidaurri mientras intentaba modernizar México. ¡Terminar la Guerra Civil! La Guerra Civil fue la Segunda Revolución Estadounidense, la última de las grandes revoluciones democrático-burguesas. Tomó cuatro años y la muerte de unos 600 mil estadounidenses —casi tantos como los que murieron en todas las demás guerras de — para por fin romper el poder esclavista. Incluidos en esta lucha estuvieron los casi 200 mil soldados negros que pelearon al lado de la Unión. La victoria del Norte en 1865 dio inicio al período más democrático en la historia de, la Reconstrucción. La guerra, al garantizar el desarrollo del capitalismo estadounidense, también sentó las bases para el desarrollo de la clase obrera de Estados Unidos —el poder que puede deshacerse del capitalismo—. Hoy en día los obreros negros constituyen un componente muy importante de esta clase obrera. Los capitalistas del Norte traicionaron la Reconstrucción y la promesa de libertad para los negros, pues persiguieron las ventajas económicas de su victoria sobre la Confederación, en lugar de promover los derechos de los negros. Hacia el final del siglo, la perversa segregación de Jim Crow se impuso. Mientras tanto, la burguesía pasó de la consolidación del poder nacional a la búsqueda del poder imperialista en el extranjero —sin dejar de lado a México y a otros países de América Latina—. El sangriento imperialismo estadounidense es el enemigo de los obreros y los oprimidos en Estados Unidos y alrededor del mundo. Y éste sigue siendo el caso con el presidente Obama, quien tiene previsto aumentar en un 50 por ciento las tropas de ocupación imperialista en Afganistán. La liberación de los obreros y campesinos en México y América Latina exige hoy revoluciones socialistas en toda América, desde el Yukón hasta Yucatán, desde Alaska a Argentina. Nosotros, en la Spartacist League/U. S., estamos dedicados a forjar un partido obrero clasista revolucionario que sea capaz de llevar a la clase obrera al poder en, que es lo que es necesario para aplastar al imperialismo estadounidense. La lucha por la liberación de los negros es esencial para esta tarea. Y es por ello que levantamos la consigna de “¡Terminar la Guerra Civil! ¡Por la liberación de los negros mediante la revolución socialista! ”.
